Survival in a Hostile Society”
North Carolina Conference
"Survival in a Hostile Society" is
the theme of the first North Carolina
Gay and Lesbian Conference, which will
be held the weekend of March 25, 26,
and 27. The Conference will be held on
the campus of the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill in conjunction
with the annual Carolina Gay Associa
tion’s "Gay Awareness Week," which
begins Monday, March 21.
The main goals of the Conference are
to examine different aspects of socie
ty's hostility toward homosexuals and
to help gay men and lesbians develop
more effective methods of surviving in
a hostile society. A number of work
shops have been planned, including
Politics and Activism, The Law and its
Effects, Social Issues, and Business
and Work. In addition, workshops and
discussions on Gay Health Issues,
Religion, Coming Out, Young People and
the University, and "Too Gay to be
Straight/Too Straight to be Gay" haye
been scheduled. Dan Bradley, the for
mer President of the Legal Services
Corporation, will speak and hold an ’
open forum.
The weekend will also have its share
of entertainment, with a coffee house
Friday night, a dance Saturday, and a
cocktail party late Saturday afternoon
with cheese, wine, and beer provided
by the N.C. State Gay Community and the
Duke Gay and Lesbian Alliance. If
enough conference goers express an
interest, there will be a mass migra
tion to a preselected restaurant in the
Chapel Hill/Durham area for dinner on
Saturday night.
