The concert featured her Rainbow Path and some improvisatory music. Gardener composes lyrical, improvisational and experimental music designed for relaxation, meditation and healing. Her work has been called New Age (a term used to describe a multitiude of musical sins including Yuppie elevator music) because it includes a variety of spiritual experiences by both the listener and the performer. The performance of A Rainbow Path was unlike any other performance I have ever attended. At the beginning of each movement a deeply colored slide with labia and flower-like images (called a mandala) is projected on the wall. The audience provides a drone by humming the meditation syllable (chakra), while focusing on a body part, feelings associated with that body part and a familiar scent. For example, in one movement with a deep purple slide, the audience focused on the heart while droning "oh" and thinking about compassion and the smell of pine needles. At the end of the performance I felt deeply relaxed and like I was in a trance. The performance gave me the opportunity to explore a huge variety of feelings in a way that was completely new to me. It felt like a healing experience -- like the most comforting hug I've ever had. (I feel like I'm raving a little bit, but trust me, it was an amazing experience.) Gardener also performed improvisatory music on a variety of flutes: concert, alto bamboo and globular. She also brought some percussion instruments from Tibetan and Native American cultures. Her music is technically impressive. She has a good knowledge of many world musical traditions and is comfortable working in modes (which are like keys) from India and Tibet, and even a Lesbian mode. A round of applause is in order for Real Women Productions. This group of three women has provided the Triangle Area with an amazing number of quality concerts in the last two years. Their shows are excellently produced and they are an invaluable asset to our community. Gardener's latest album, "A Rainbow Path" is available on the locally-owned Ladyslipper label. It contains information on the meditations that accompany the music. --Pippa Holloway 728 NINTH STREET.
