'I f from the editor The mainstream media often ignores many of the let ters in LGBTIQ. Take “T,” for example. How frequendy do you see transgender issues discussed in the media? Or, perhaps a better question is, how accurate is the information you are receiveing about transgender issues? The contribu tors for this edition of LAMBDA have demanded answers to these questions. From passing to sex reas signment, this issue contains dialogue- about a broad range of concerns that transgender people face. All LGBTIQ people are indeed “square pegs” in a world where we are encouraged to conform and fit into the popular circles, but what about those of us who have a harder time fitting in than the rest? People who fall outside of the gender binary, people who do not fit the ideal of youthful beauty and people who march to the beat of their own drums are often ostraci2ed within our own communities. Instead of catering to the mainstream, this issue intends challenge its readers and consider the possibility that one size can never fit all. As icing on the cake, this issue also glances back at the LGBTIQ-related events that took place on The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s campus during the fall 2005 semester; a “queer-in-review,” if you will. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, why are some people’s ideals of beauty held above others? This issue of LAMBDA may ultimately give you more questions than answers; but, nonetheless, we hope you learn a thing or two.
