BENTON After an 18-21 season in 1986 Louisburg College fast pitch softball coach Sheilah Gotten is looking for better and bright days ahead for her Lady Hurricanes this year. 1986 marked the first year for the college and fast pitch softball. Prior to last season it was strictly slow pitch softball. A year ago only one member of the Lady Hurricanes had ever played fast pitch. But now eight individuals on the current Louisburg squad can boast of having fast pitch experience either in the high school ranks or on the college level. Wlien you look at the meat and potatoes part of the Louisburg softball team you need look no further than at the Lady Hurricanes pitching and catching after all are essential to having a good fast pitch club. At the present time Gotten plans to use a four member pitching rotation. Ellen Dinota heads up the Lady ’Cane staff. Dinota, a freshman, brings impressive credentials with her to Louisburg. During her high school days at East Islip she threwfive no-hitters. “She’s a lefty and she throws a pitch that’s down and inside,” said Gotten. “Those type of pitches are tough to hit.” Backing Dinota up will be freshman Janelle Thompson of Southern Alamance. The remainder of the Louisburg staff includes freshman Frances Holt of Lee County and sophomore Debra Joyner of Farmville. Behind the plate Gotten has a pair of fine players in Pam Suter and Dalen Herring. Suter, a freshman out of Washington Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia will handle 90% of the catching duties this season. Herring, also a first-year player as well, doubles as an outfielder. Herring is from Greene Central. In the Louisburg infield this year count on sophomore Sharlene Hunter from Northern Nash at first, sophomore Michelle Deal from Davie County at second, freshman Debbie Roe from Pender County at shortstop and freshman Amy Baker from Southern Durham to mann third base. “Once Debbie and Amy gain experience they’ll solidify our infield,” said C^tten. Playing in the outfield for the Lady Hurricanes will be a list of players that include sophomore Janus Plummer (Wallace-Rose Hill) and freshmen Janelle Thompson arid Denise Warren (Greene Central). Cheryl Bass, who is a sophomore untility player from Northern Nash, and freshman Scarlett Ricks, and infielder from Northampton County-East round out the Louisburg softball roster.
