Introduction
In terms of prominence and prestige, Black fraternities, sororities and social
organizations have made significant gains in recent years.
These groups, amid the pomp and pageantry of block shows and dances have, indeed,
come a long way in their relatively short-lived existence on the Carolina campus,
particularly when one considers that Omega Psi Phi fraternity and Alpha Kappa Alpha
sorority composed THE only Black Greek organizations in Chapel Hill in the early
Seventies.
We attempt, in this Special Issue neither to criticize nor sing the praise of Black
fraternities and sorotities, but simply to acknowledge their almost phenomenal growth
and popularity and to explore the how's and why's of their recent upsurge.
We would, in closing like to thank photographer Herbert Davis for his valuable
assistance in the production of this issue and to convey a general note of gratitude to
our readers, whose comments and support have encouraged us tremendously.
