In addition the student takes 13 hours of science elecUves. which may mclude BoUny. and four non-divisional elecUves. The botany department was the first one to establish a student association on cam pus. The group is the botany undergraduate student association. (BUSA). BUSA members are able to sit on com mittees and get involved in the politics and designs of the department. The botany department has several facilities available for students and in terested individuals. These include greenhouse, or growth chambers, the ar boretum. which is a horticultural garden, the N.C. Botanical Gardens on the 15-501 bypass. One may also go by the Botany department in Coker Hall. Students wishing more information on botany as a mjaor or would like more in formation on the different courses in the curriculum may go by the botany depart ment office or contact Dr. Tom Scott, chairman in 205 Coker. Dr. William Koch, director of undergraduate studies in 309 Coker, or Nancy Tannenbaum, who works with student affairs. Delta Sigma Theta UNC’s first Black sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded in 1913 at Howard University. t , oi iot-j The Kappa Omicron chapter was chartered on July 21,1973. Their colors *'^ThS*yri^^group consists of 13 members with Vanessa Washington as ^ Some of the projects sponsored by the sorority are a Cyclethon. and two scholarships. These scholarships are presented to rismg freshmen. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Alumni group make up the graduate chapter. The “Pyramids” are the members of the group’s pledge line. Each year the Deltas sponsor the “Sweetheart Ball.” Alpha Kappa Alpha Tutorial services, the big sister program, visits to nursery schools and rest homes and financial support to various charities are some of the service prolectsof Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. . The group was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington. D.C. . The Theta Pi chapter arrived on the UNC campus on April 20,1974. The group has 12 members with Sandra Wilson as president. Their colors are pink and green. i Members of the pledge line are called, “Ivys. The newly formed graduate chapter contains 40 members. Each year the sorority sponsors. “Club AKA.” Zeta Phi Beta Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded Jan. 16,1920 at Howard University as a result of encouragement from the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. ^ h-v-i On Nov. 18.1978 the group entered the UNC campus. Their colors are blue 3nd white Since arriving on campus some of the group’s projects have been a heart fund drive, work with the BSM, the Carolina Times, and the NAACP. They also participated in a nursing home project where they found volunteers to go out to homes and entertain the elderly residence there. The current president is Diana Thompson and the group now has three members.
