Recently Carolina’s Mikeman was fired. What do you
thinli about the Mileman’s situation? Do you think it was
handled appropriately?

Personally, I feel Kenny was doing his job to the
degree that was expected of any mikeman. The crowd
was not a spirited crowd and due to that fact, Kenny
tried to prompt the crowd. When they did not respond
he resorted to telling jokes which offended several
people. This prompted Sharon Mitchell to ask for his
resignation and eventually fire him which was not fair.
She could have just asked him to pipe down on his of
fensive jokes. I don't blame Kenny for standing his
ground.

The mikeman's jokes were inappropriate for the
game situation. No, I do not feel his situation was
handled appropriately because he was not given a
chance to prove himself. It is unfair that the people
who fired him had no hand in appointing him. He
should be given another chance.

I don't think they handled it correctly. If there was a
Sammy Tucker problem with his performances they should have con
fronted him first.

Too big an issue has been made of the mikeman
situation.

I would think there is more to it than what's been in
the newspaper. I feel that there are raciaf overtones. I
feel that there should have been some official repri
mand. If it Is not race, then what is it? Why would
Karen Hatch students react so favorably at one one game to an 11
year old white boy and not cheer with Kenny, it was
definitely racism.

No, it was not handled appropriately. 1 think
whoever had concerns about it should have approach
ed him with an official warning. I never heard of
anyone who has ever been fired from an extracur
ricular activity. If I said something that some students
did not agree with could Sharon Mitchell ask for my
James Exum resignation and will she expect to get it? And if I don't
resign, does she have the right to fire me? T-o all these
questions, I say no! She does not have the right.
Students are the only ones who have the right to
remove other students from student leadership posi
tions.

The Division of Student Affairs has handled the
situation very chaotically. I have a great deal of con
cerns about the procedures used in asking for Kenny's
resignation. The admistration needs to share with the
students information concerning previous events that
led up to the Mikeman being fired.

On the whole, I admire Kenny Ward for being the
first black mikeman UNC ever had because it's not an
easy job getting before thousands of people. I think
he really lost some of his support because some of his
jokes were distasteful. 1 think he could have had
everyone's support if his jokes were toned down. You
want a mikeman to make the crowd feel motivated to
cheer. I thought he lacked enthusiasm. The students
should have had more input in the decision.

1 think the situation was handled poorly. It seemed
by popular opinion that my article to the DTH was at
tacking the white race which I was not, just three in
dividuals specifically. Our white peers dwelled on the
racial issue. Ward initially felt there were racial under
tones and all I did was to reiterate what he said and
blow off a little steam. He should have been given a

The Town of Carrboro will have
two black candidates vying for the
three seats open on the Board of
Alderman.
Doris Foushee and Rev. B. Willis
Wilson I! are both concerned with
town growth and the area water
problem.
"I am interested in providing
growth of business that will not im
pede our natural resources," said
Foushee. "I would like to provide low
density growth while maintaining
old, historic Carrboro," said she.
Foushee, a resident of Carrboro for
eighteen years, thinks that com
munity members should pitch in and
provide some input to the beauty
and growth of Carrboro. "Working,
learning, and growing together is the
link that cements understanding and
trust necessary for sound community
planning," said Foushee.
Foushee, a mother of two, re
ceived a B.S. in health from North
Carolina Central University and
M.P.H. from the School of Public
Health at UNC. She plans to later at
tend law school at UNC.
"For the past eight years 1 have
been nursing and health care spe
cialist counselor for the Durham
CFTA program The experience as a
member of various community or
ganizations has enabled me to work
with a cross reference of community
members," she said.
"1 am also concerned with expan
ding the mass transit system out'ide
the city limits," said Foushee. "> o
need to be concerned with the
citizens outside the city limits I
don't know how far the existing
system goes out but I will look into
the matter, she said
Foushee Is a member of the Carr
boro Planning Board, Carrboro
Recreation Commission, NC Political
Caucus, Panel of American Women,
South Orange Black Caucus, and
MItchel Chapel Church. She is chair
man of the Orange-Chatham Alliance
Against Political Repression, vice
chairman of the Grey Culbreth
Parent Teachers Association, and is
precinct chalrrnan of the University
Lake precinct
Rev. Wilson Is also concerned with
town growth and the water problem
He would like to attract business
to the area to increase revenue into
the city. "Industry should be at
