U.S. must act
— continued from page 2 —
sorrow and outrage. Inevitably, there
must be suffering before peace as
there must be a storm before a rain
bow. Do not listen to the entreaties
of those weak-willed pacifists who
are blinded by fear and made less
than men by cowardice. Our end
goal is worth it, worth anything. A
fool can see that the peace and
security we can provide to the world
is worth the struggle to make it possi
ble.
Alas, there will be those who will
refuse our gift of world democracy
but they, like children, do not know
what is best for them. And like
children they must be made to obey
for their own good.
And after the blood and bodies of
our enemies and our slain have
mixed with the soil of the earth a new
world will arise like a phoenix from
the ashes of war We will guide it,
nurture it until it blooms into a new
garden of Eden. And our president,
Ronald Reagan, will rule as keeper
and protector of a democratic world.
We will be happy. There will be
peace, equality and love because we
will, by right and by might, make it
so. ■
Helms not a racist—
— continued from page 2 —
Claude Allen, a 1982 political
science and linguistics graduate of
the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill works on the Jesse Helms
staff. Allen is black and Allen knows
Helms. When asked if he thought
Helms is racist, Allen stated, "No, I
don't."
Allen was registered as a Demo
crat. However, despite his registra
tion, in 1982, Allen worked with
Republican Bill Cobey. After the
election, Allen looked more closely
at what the national parties stood for
and found that he did not agree with
many of the Democratic positions.
So, on November 3, 1982, Allen
changed his registration to Republi
can. Allen talked to many people on
the Helms staff and later joined the
staff as the only black. He felt he
could better relate to Helms because
he agreed with many of his positions.
Allen said his reasons for becoming
a Republican are because he is eco
nomically conservative, he favors
U.S. interest abroad, he is against
abortions, and he is also against bus
ing. Allen said he agrees with Helms
that blacks have the most to gain in a
two-party system.

"Blacks have locked themselves
into one system (Democratic) and
thus have sold themselves short,"
Allen said. Although he comes from
a family of Democrats, Allen feels
that blacks have the most to gain by
participating in both systems.
In his support of Helms, Allen like
wise supports Helms' refusal of the
King holiday. "Many civil rights
leaders deserve a holiday, such as
Jesse Owens, Mary Bethune-Cookman,
and Booker T. Washington. Why
single out one individual for a na
tional holiday?" said Allen. "I am
against shutting down the entire na
tion for any individual, black or
white."
Allen said media is a big problem
for Helms' public relations. "The
press has built an anti-black, anti
poor image of Jesse Helms," he said.
Allen said blacks do not look at the
image but at the man behind the im
age. He advises blacks not to believe
everything they see on television.
Allen also feels that Helms could be
more receptive to blacks by being
more aware of black leaders and
listening to the needs of the black
community.
"It's a give and take thing," Allen
said. "Helms is a man of principle,
you always know where he stands on
an issue." Allen explained that Helms
is working for the black man, he said,
"Blacks have the most to gain from
the free market." Because of the
media coverage, few blacks see
Helms as "working for them," he
said.
Finally, Allen-advises blacks to call
or write to Helms and discuss their
feelings on given issues.
"Helms' door is always open to
blacks as well as anyone else," he
said. ■

SOMEDAY YOU'LL WIN
A storm was raging
dark and gray,
Yet through the clouds,
beamed a golden ray.
Suddenly a rainbow
sprung across the sky
And I heard angelic voices
Each one saying "try"!
"Grab on to the rainbow,"
they seemed to say
"Climb up to the dreams
that await you someday
For this is the gold
and the rainbow's end,
The hope and the promise
that someday you'll win!"

VIOLENCE ON THE SCREEN
Let me see your hands
my child
they're red, blood red
What? Your friend
is dead?
Why — where did you
learn to kill?
On t.v — but that's
not real...
How red — they
won't come clean
because of something
you have seen,
constant violence'
on the screen...
MY COD THEY WON'T
COME CLEAN!

Sure, these organizations have
been made fun of, but they are a
vital part of the black student's
cultural and social needs. Upendo
Lounge is necessary for Black
organizations to carry out their ac
tivities. If Upendo Lounge was to
close tomorrow, all of these
organizations would come to an im
mediate halt. It would only take a se
cond to realize that Upendo Lounge
is a very important part of our lives.
