Tuesday, April 15,1986 Black Ink 7 Choir names president by Abraham Segres Staff Writer Ray Wallington, a junior Inter national Studies major from Madison, N.C. was elected the 1986-87 president of the Black Student Movement Gospel Choir at the choir’s annual elections April 3. Wallington, former parliamen tarian and treasurer, said he felt he was well prepared for the position. The choir also elected Carla Edwards as vice-president, Sophia Silverthornee as secretary, Saroya Webb as tresurer, and Billy Hagwood as parliamentarian. For most of this semester Wallington has been acting as co president of the choir with Danny Lytle due to the early resignation of the last president, Gwen Upchurch. However, now Lytle will serve as director. As president, Wallington said he has gpreat hopes and plans for the future. One of his primary objectives is to increase the choir’s active membership to approximately 60, he said. Choir membership is 45. He hopes to establish several task committees within the choir to give the members greater sense of responsibility. Delegation of power, Wallington said, will benefit everyone involved with the choir. Because of a lack of funds, the choir was not able to make its annual spring tour this year, but Wallington hopes to continue it next spring. AcMevers them.” Both Edwards and Henderson said they used the resources available here such as Dean Renwick’s office, tutorials and they have participated with the MA program. This summer Edwards will engage in a travel study in Europe where he’ll study folk music in Great Britain, France and Spain. Last summer Henderson designed and completed a travel study abroad program which entailed visiting eight European countries. “I did a compar ison/contrast on European and American blacks.” She said she enjoyed France the most and spent two weeks in Paris. “And at the end of the summer I submitted a paper to the Morehead Foundation describing what I’d found.” On April 20th, the choir will celebrate its 15th anniversary in a spring concert at 3 p.m. in Great Hall. Many alumni are expected to be pre sent and to participate. Wallington and the choir hopes that everyone will come out and support the choir in this 15th anniversary celebration. continued from page 5 Next year, Henderson will be attending law school, but she isn’t quite sure where. “Right now it looks like either Michigan or Berkley.” Henderson has applied to five schools and is waiting to hear from Harvard. She said she has enjoyed her years at UNC although, “I haven’t done as much extra-curricularly as I would have liked.” Next year Edwards will be presi dent of Alpha Epsilon Delta.
