Could it be the pressure of oncoming final exams? Nah, it's basketball season. I love basketball season, and the anticipation of a new season always makes me feel this way. I love both college and pro hoops, and I even take in a couple of high school games every year. Although I detest winter and its cold weather, the thrill I get from watching basketball all but makes up for it. As you may have read about six weeks ago, I predicted that the Minnesota Twins would defeat the St. Louis Car dinals in the World Series, though there was still about two weeks left in the regular season. So now 1 know you are saying to yourself, “1 wonder what Mills' basketball predictions are going to be." OK, you forced me to tell you. Rumor has it that the ACC is no longer the best conference in college basketball. Some say that the Big East, Big Eight, Big Ten and SEC are as good as and possibly better. Let me assure you that they are not. These conferences aren’t contenders, they are just pretenders. Year in and year out the ACC has consistently been the best basketball conference in the land, and things aren’t about to change. Once again, Carolina should be the top dog in the ACC. The Tarheels are the most talented and most well coached team in the conference. But this season will not be a cakewalk like it was last year. The Heels are a young team, and everyone must learn his role. Expect some early season setbacks, and don’t expect to see Jeff Lebo at point guard at mid-season. The Heels just don’t click like they should with Lebo as the quarterback. But if Kevin Madden has improved to the point that I think he has, watch for him to dominate games in the middle and latter parts ot the season. Georgia Tech should battle Carolina for the top spot this season. The Yellow- jackets feature the best forward tandem in the country with Duane Ferrell and Tom Hammonds. With the loss ot Antoine Ford at center (academic setbacks), sophomore James Munlyn must be able to play up to par. Duke has a solid squad returning from last season, and once Dan ny Ferry learns that he doesn't have to try to carry the team on his shoulders, the Blue Devils will be even better. Return ing players like Billy King, John (find a nickname) Smith, Kevin Strickland, Robert Brickley, and Quin Snyder provide a strong team of mules to carry the load during the tough February nights ot late ACC action. NC State should finish 4th in the con ference. With the exception of Charles Shackelford, there’s not a lot to brag about over in Raleigh this year. Clemson will be 5th. 1 know that they lost Horace Grant, but they have a number ot strong, young ball players who will give it a good run this season. Coach Bobo Wade along with the return of star guard Leith Gatlin should assure Maryland of at least a 6th place finish. If freshman center Brian Williams can step in and give the Terps quality minutes, star forward Derrick Lewis may be able to lead his team to a higher finish in the conference. There is little that can be said about Virginia and Wake Forest, so 1 won't. These guys are just going to have to wait until next year. As for the ACC tournament, I don't see Carolina winning it. The finals will consist of Tech and Duke playing a close one with Tech prevailing. How about the national championship, you say? Not even a renowned prognosticator like me is will ing to bite on that one, yet, but I will before the season is over. by CHARLES MILLS Sports Editor One day last year, I was practicing my putting stroke out on the balcony of 3rd floor Morrison. A sister who lived on the floor walked up to me and said that I was the first black person she had ever met who plays golf. I thought it somewhat strange at the time but did not give it much thought. Recently, while leisurely riding my bike down Finley golf course road, I passed three brothers crossing the road between holes number 16 and 17. It then dawned on me that they were the first black people, besides myself and a friend of mine, that I had ever seen playing golf out there. What's the deal? Why don’t more black people play golf.^ Admittedly, it is an expensive sport when you consider buying clubs, balls, and paying green fees. Also, golf is time consuming and very frustrating if you are just learning the game. But on the other hand, it is so much fun and even addicting. If you try golf once, you want to try it again. Plus it is one of the few sports where men and women can play against each other in a completely competetive manner. The women’s teeing area is setup closer the hole to compensate for the strength dif ference, and from that point on, skill and a little luck are the only factors that matter. You still are not convinced, huh. Take this into consideration then. Michael Jordan is considered by many to be the best basketball player in the world. At the same time, Lawrence Taylor is considered to be the best football player in the game today. Both are avid golfers who have spent many a day playing golf over at Finley, and it is still one of the first places they go when they visit Chapel Hill. Give golf a chance. Try it; you might like it. So the next time I’m trying to hit my way out of the woods on hole number 5, stop by and holler at me. You can thank me for turning you on to a new experience. it easy r\OVv per 99 2 ust 3 dozen pev Aditiona CAROLINA PRIDE 151 East Franklin Street Downtown Chapel Hill North Carolina 27514
