Page 4 October 18, 1988 BSM Activities By Gerda Gallop There are a wide range of Black or ganizations and groups at Carolina for students to become involved in. Various committees of the BSM in clude: The Freshmen Class Committee, the Cultural Committee, the Secretarial Pool, the Publicity Committee, the Spe cial Projects Committee, and the Membership Committee. The standing committees are: Academic Minority Recruitment, Com munity Services, and Black Cultural Awareness. Several of the BSM sub-groups include: • The Black Ink — the organization’s official newspaper, contact Garraud Etienne, editor. 933-7798. • The Ebony Readers — a dramatic performance group which interprets the works of Black authors like Langston Hughes and Nikki Giovanni. The group has 5-8 performances a year including one at Duke and for The Black Alumni Assoc, contact Cedric Brown, pres. 933-2306. • The BSM Gospel Choir — a musical group that performs gospel music and has toured in-state as well as in Atlanta, New York, and other major cities. The group has also recorded several albums, contact Patrick Johnson, pres. • The Opeyo Dancers — a jazz dance performance group that has two fall and spring recitals as well as perfor mances at other universities. The word opeyo means “freedom” in Swahili, contact Tammi Hampton, artistic direc tor. 933-3411. • Black Women United of UNC-CH is an organization that was started to unite and address the issues of Black women at UNC — students, faculty, staff and the Chapel Hill community. BWU has two co-chairs and a steering committee. The group held its first annual banquet last year and sponsored several speakers, contact Valerie Leach (933-8281) or Teressa McKoy (933-3513), co-chairs. • The Black Greek Council is compris ed of the four black fraternities, Alpha Officially Recognized Student Organizations Division of Student Affairs, UNC-CH July 11, 1988 Assuming there are no problems, these organizations will be officially recognized through September 30, 1988. It serves as a networking organization for students and alumni and assist the university in recruiting qualified black students into graduate and professional school. The Alliance of Black Graduate and Professional Students also provides counseling to graduate and professional students and prospective students. Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Phi Beta Sigma; and the three Black sororities. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta. Project Upward Bound is an academic tutorial and counseling pro gram for disadvantaged high school students in Orange and Chatham coun ties and Durham. Selected students live on the college campus for six weeks dur ing the summer and participate in a variety of academic, social and cultural activities. During the school year, students attend bi-monthly Saturday sessions for tutorials, skill building, career awareness and motivation ac tivities. Beech Fund (cont’d from Page 3} Board of Directors The Board of Directors of the Harvey Beech Fund will be composed of the fol lowing: BSM President, BSM Special Projects Chair(s), Student Body Presi dent, Associate Dean for the Office of Student Counseling, Vice Chancellor for University Affairs, Carolina Indian Circle President, UNC-Varsity Head Basketball Coach, UNC-Varsity Head Football Coach, UNC Athletic Direc tor. The Board will be the leaders of the fund. If any of its members are unable to serve, the Board will make the final decision on their replacement. The board will also appoint the scholarship committee, as well as determine what organizations will receive money from the discretionary fund. Spending of Money The percentile breakdown of the money spent out of the Beech Fund will be 75% scholarships, 15% BCC, 10% Discretionary fund. Since the original $50,000 will have to be endowed, in the first year (Fall 1989) only $10,000 from the principle will be spent, however, the Board will maintain a smaller account that will contribute directly to scholar ships. The purpose of the smaller account will be for groups such as the BSM, CIC, etc. to raise funds and specify which percentage is to be spent immediately. This money in the smaller account will be added to the amount earned from the interest of the larger Fund to determine the total amount available for spending. Breakdown of Money to be Spent The amount of the individual schol arships will be $1000 per year. Afro- American students will receive 75% of the money to be spent for scholarships, Native American students 15% and other American Minorities 10%. Each group which receives monies will be expected to contribute to the Beech Fund. All of the money given to the Black Cultural Center by the Beech Fund will go directly to the program ming/resources budget. The 10% left from the total budget will go to the dis cretionary fund, which will be spent at the discretion of the Board. Scholarsllip Committee The scholarship committee shall be composed of appointments from the following: BSM President, Student Body President, Associate Dean of OSC, Vice-Chancellor for University Affairs, President Carolina Indian Circle. The scholarship committee shall determine the recipients based mostly on academic improvement (i.e. 2.0 spring semester gpa—2.5 fall semester gpa). The board will choose the chair from the appointed committee. The first scholarship recipients will be selected by the close of the Spring 1989 semester and will receive funds at the start of the Fall 1989 semester.
