If only they h^d succeeded!.* Carolina Union Activities Board - New and Improved This year UNC will see a new and improved Carolina Union Activities Board (CUAB). With its diverse and entertaining field of programs and plans for 1990, CUAB functions should be an integral part of student life. CUAB consists of approximately 13 committees (chosen by the CUAB president), each formed to focus on the different parts and aspects of student interest. Unlike the past years, CUAB com mittees this year will be a bit more overlapping in duties and focus so that no one single student will have no excuse but to get involved. The 13 committees are as follows: Gallery, chaired by Sylvia Thyssen, deals with art exhibits in the Carolina Union Gallery and in the glass show cases also in the Carolina Union. The art displayed here usually ranges from student to local to theme art, with such exhibits as AIDS AWARENESS, and a recent textile ensemble. Film, chaired by David Hall, brings all of the latest movies to the Union Auditorium. Check the Union front desk for showtime schedules!! Forum, chaired by Peter Hayes, brings in prominent speakers and experts in their fields from all over the country. Past speakers include Louis Fan-akhan, Robert Townsend, Maya Angelou, and Spike Lee. Theater Arts, Social Adventures, and Performing Arts, chaired by Eric Rosen, MC Dagenhart, and Malini Moorthy respectively, share the focus on student entertainment and talent with programs such as live bands, dances, and theater. This year, CUAB’s Performing Arts series will bring such performances to Chapel Hill as Sarifina, the Boys Choir of Harlem, the Chicago Dance Theater, and the play Into the Woods. Performing Arts Outreach, chaired by Rich Kirkland, is actually the support group, and sometimes the selection group of the Performing Arts Series. Current Issues, chaired by Kim Williams, brings a creative approach to important social issues instead of traditional speakers and lectures. In the past this committee has confronted the problem of date rape with a “Mock Date Rape Trial.” Cun-ent Issues has also showed viewings of Spike Lee's “Do The Right Thing”, with discussion sessions afterward. College Bowl, chaired by Marian McBrine, is a Jeopardy-type trivia tournament which fields over 40 teams at UNC. Winners of UNC’s tournament gain an automata bid to the Associa tion of College Unions Intemationl Tournament. Concert Advisory, chaired by Carrie McLaren, is in charge of finding concerts and outdoor music events and acts for UNC students. Special Projects, chaired by Stephanie Ellis, is a more flexible committee in that it can chose and give a more intense drive toward the issue or plans of the consensual committee feeling. Advertising and Public Relations, chaired by Erk: Routenberg and Gwen Eye Contact Con't from p. 5 building houses for the homeless, and the list goes on. During your university career, you will be impressed and fascinated, you will also be disturbed and frustrated. As you embark upon UNC, consider your choices— you can cause the problems that exist or even ignore them. Or you can choose to look them straight in the eye and make a difference. CD Shilpi Somaya is co-president of the Campus Y for the 1990-1991 academic year. Perry respectively, aim to be the liason with other parti of the university. They keep and “ear to the ground” to see what people want to see and what they don’t see enough of. These two committees relate with all on-campus organizations. With the help of these committees and of Program Advisor, Nancy Bolish and Assistant Program Advisor, Mike Goode, UNC’s CUAB will be the envy of all. Information for getting involved in any of the CUAB committees, go to the front desk in the Carolina Student Union. Become involved in the Caro lina Activities Board and make a difference.
