--Notes from the Editors-- Inside Black Ink Glistening brown bodies romping playfully on white sands. Palm trees swaying gently in the cool, dusk breeze. Clear blue waves lapping playfully at • my feet. Hot days, cool nights and fun, fun fun. I'd love to tell you more about my summer spent in the most incredible tropic ever, however since 1 spent my summer here in Chapel Hill working on Black Ink and going to class, I won’t bore you with my fantasies any longer. Although I didn’t go to Morocco or Ghana, I had a pretty interesting summer. In spite of budget cuts, UNC is still functioning and some of its departments are actually doing quite well. The Academic Support Services and The Office of Student Counseling are, once again, managing to bring several very beneficial programs to the UNC community and in this issue of Black Ink, we take a look at the programs offered and at the retention rates that could be improved if more students took advantage of these programs. In addition to academic service programs, Black Ink explores the 2 live Crew controversy in Black Ink’s FORUM. Please remember to feel free to send any comments you have regarding 2 Live Crew or other issues to our office. We welcome the comments and opinions of our readers. Finally, I would like to welcome all of the freshmen to Pre-Orientation and UNC (sorry, I had to do it. By next week you will be so sick of WELCOME! Forgive us, we mean well). Best Wishes to all for the new school year and if you are interested in Black Ink please don’t forget the first meeting of the year! The meeting will be September 4 in room 226 of the Student Union at 6:30. See Ya! Peace Erika F. Campbell Here it is, the first issue of Black Ink for the 1990-1991 academic year (for that matter, the first UNC publication of the 1990-1991 academic year). With a new look, and a new attitude on things, in this issue we tried to keep the format that we will retain for the remainder of the year yet at the same time devote a special issue to incoming students to give a headstart on all of the chaos that will go on the week of the 27th. Also, for the months of September and October we will mn bi-weekly to get things running smoothly and to get incoming freshmen acquainted with our organization. Once we’re conditioned and ready, we’ll move to our weekly format, spanning from November to May We mean business in the months to come.but we need your help to continue successfully. THINK Black Ink! Be on the lookout for our second issue due to hit the stands the fourth of September. In the space that I have left I’d just like to leave vou with some thinRS that vou would never hear at a freshman Pre-O meeting but are important nonetheless: •Your grades are first, second, third, and fourth. (That good luck drink from the Old Well just doesn’t work) •You had better enjoy the hell out of yourself this week, because when classes start you will not see light until December. •Your parents are just as ready to leave as you are for them to leave. (Mine moved to Arizona the week after 1 first left for UNC) •This number- 968-FAST- and ten coupons will get you through many a nights. •Finally, you really don’t need a football ticket to go see a football game in the seat you want (So why waste a hike to the Dome?) Next week the editorials will be a bit more serious, we just needed to get this out of out systems; I promise.
