The national touring production is part of the Carolina Union’s 1990-91 Per forming Arts Series. Tickets are $20 for the general public, $ 11 for UNC students, and are available from the Carolina Union Box Office. Into The Woods musically explores what happens to the Brothers Grimm’s best known folktale characters, and some new ones, after the “happily ever af ter.” Four well-known fairy tales —Cinderella, Jack and the Bean stalk, the Baker and His Wife and Little Red Ridding Hood — are combined into one story to pick up where the nairator left off. Into the Woods began as a workshop at Playwrights Horizons in the summer of 1986 and pre miered as a fully staged produc tion in December of that year at the Old Globe Theatre in San Di- “Kinder and Hausmarchen” (Young People’s and Household Tales). Assembled over a period of five years, the 86 folk tales were published in 1812 and have sold close to a billion copies in no few^ than 20,000 editions in 50 lan guages People, Arts ego. An additional two-week workshop took place at 890 Stu dios in August 1987 prior to re hearsals for the Broadway pro duction. The musical opened on No vember 5, 1987, the 175th anni versary of the publication of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s classic The original cast of Into The Woods starred Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, Chip 2^in, Tom AldredgeandRobertWestenburg. Phylicia Rashad has returned to Broadway to assume the role of the Witch. Choreographer Lar Lubovitch, whose dance company celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, did the musical staging for Into the Woods. Honors for the musical include the 1988 New Yoric Drama Critics Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical, three Tony Awards and a 1989 Grammy Award for Best Cast Album. "Into the Woods is total en chantment,” said Howard Kissel of the New York Daily News. “A spellbinding score, witty enough to makeold stories fresh for adults, lovely enough to enchant young sters. The cast is perfection. If you can resist its luscious star, Ber nadette Peters, you are beyond the help of potions and spells.” Adding reality to the original tales, “a trip Into the Woods re veals that nice people lie, good people die and marriage is a good way to end a relationship,” said the Salt Lake Tribune. Even with its daric moments, the musical is Oiled with affmna- tion of life and what it means to grow up. As Cinderella tells the grieving Red Riding Hood, “Sometimes people leave you, halfway through the wood. Oth ers may deceive you. You decide what’s good. You decide alone.
