Rhimebut one should not over
look some other possible hit tracks
like, “Bugging Out ” ‘The Infamous
Date Rape,” and “Scenario.”
“Bugging Out,” my personal favor
ite, uses a very funky bass guitar
that, when placed on a quality sound
system, makes your heart skip a
beat
‘The Infamous Date Rape” is
about just that, and highlights the
lyrically serious side of Quest, with
a backdrq) of continuous funky
music. Leaders of the New School
from the Elektra record label guest
star on “Scenario,” and introduce
an engaging variety of rap styles
from both groups that will make
you cheese from coast to coast Two
mOTeguests,LOTdJammar and Sadat
X Allah of Brand Nubian, also of
the Elektra label, complement Quest
in “Show Business,” a song about
the difficulty of making it in the r^
industry.
The Low End Theory is a very
good album, topping Quest’s first
effort. Their distinct, smooth lyrics
and mellow, jazzy style of music
make them a very unique group in a
musical genre fiUed with clones.

MC Lyte
Act Like You Know
First Priority Records
Reviewed by Pamela Best
Stop, look, and listen—MC Lyte
is back with a vengeance in her
third album. Act Like You Know.
This could prove to be one of the
best the fall has to offer. The pro
duction talents of Audio Two (with
a little help from DJ Mark the 45
King) combine with Lyte’s distinct
vocal quality and hard core lyrics
that make for an album well worth
your listening time. Act Like You
Know is composed of sbiteen full
length cuts and three interludes. The
album is relatively long, but the
listener will not tire of it
Lyte has matured over the years
and this is reflected on her most
recent project There are some who
may say she has completely altered
her style, but the New Ywk rapper
has actually just modified itto focus
more on problems of today’s soci
ety, as displayed in songs like: “Eyes
Are the Soul,” which takes a serious
look at teenage pregnancy, drug
abuse and AIDS; and “Poor Geor-
Is Public Enemy's popular appeal beginning to show in their music and actions?
gie,” which warns youngsters that
no one is promised tomorrow.
Lyte kicks some serious knowl
edge, and yet does not stray from
her proven hard core style. She
includes a variety of dance tunes
such as “Kamikaze,” “Search for
the Lyte” and “Big Bad Sister.” She
goes further and manages to add a
couple of ballads to show that, al
though she is lough, she is also a
woman. Be on the look out for
“Beyond the Hype,” and “All That,”
which will almost certainly be the
chart climbers of this album, if re
leased. Both songs have driving
drum tracks and are overflowing
with the dope lyrics that made Lyte
famous.
Act Like You Know should have
wide appeal; it has something for
everyone. Just when you thought
Lyte couldn’t get any better, she
did.
