Michelle S. Cofield is the new assistant dean of students and the
harassment and assault prevention coordinator here at the University.
Cofield is a UNC-CH graduate. She received her bachelor’s degree in journal
ism with a concentration in advertising and went on to complete her law degree
here. . . .
As dean of students, Cofield deals with the various situations that can arise in
crisis intervention and management. As a coordinator, she organizes on-campus
programs related to harassment and assault prevention dealing directly with stu
dent groups. ^
Prior to working at the University, Cofield was a civil litigation attorney at
North State Legal Services in Hillsborough for four years.
NeEKA Walden Williams hopes to recruit more minority students to
our University through her position as assistant director of admissions.
Walden Williams is another UNC-CH graduate. She said her close ties to the
college inspired her to pursue a career here. , .
As assistant director, Walden Williams, will work close with the University
Affairs department to increase the pool of acceptable minority applicants.
Walden Willliams was a recruitment requisition processor at the Human
Resource Department in Chapel Hill before becoming assistant director.
Ruth IYOB is a visiting lecturer at the University Center for International
Studies and the African & Afro-American Studies Curriculum.
A native of Eritrea, Africa, lyob, teaches Introduction to African Civilization
and conducts a seminar on North Eastern Africa. • cu
lyob hopes to get to know people and get them interested about Africa. She
welcomes students to visit her at her office in the Alumni Building.
lyob received her bachelor’s and two master’s degrees from Washington
University in St. Louis, Missouri. She received her doctorate in political science from
the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Michael West is a visiting history and Afro-American studies professor
from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champagne.
West is teaching Introduction to African and Afro-American Studies this
semesUr.ative received his undergraduate degree from Lake Forest
University in Illinois. He went on to earn his graduate degree at Harvard University.
