Story by Ishna Hall and Ange-Marie Hancock
On Saturday, October 11, 1997, 57,000 people
were on hand as Mr. BSM, Vinston Rozier, and Ms. BSM,
Melanie Sellars, were crowned UNC’s 1997 Homecoming
King and Queen. Just one month earlier Rozier and Sellars
were crowned Mr. and Ms. BSM respectively at the BSM’s
Annual Coronation Ball. This also marks the 5th year in a
row that an African-American woman has been chosen as
UNC’s Homecoming Queen and the 2nd year in a row that
the King has been an African-American man.
In both selection processes, candidates are
required to submit an application, undergo interviews, and
also create a community service project to be completed
during their reign. Melanie Sellars’ service entitled “ Giving
to Others Daily” is, according to her, a “three-day ser
vice...campaign which includes student, faculty and other
university volunteers.” The first day, volunteers will visit
the North Carolina Children’s Hospital and spend time with
the patients during the afternoon. The second day volun
teers will feed the less fortunate at the Inter-Faith Council
Community House, and the third day will be a day of inter
faith celebration along with spiritual awareness.
Vinston Rozier has created two service projects to
complete during his reign. His first service project will be
a walk-a-thon for Breast Cancer, in which participants will
have individuals pledge a specific amount of money for
each mile or lap they walk. The second service project is a
“ Honor Jam” for elementary honor students who have
made a significant improvement. During the “ Honor Jam”,
“ students will be honored by the university community and
will enjoy entertainment from various student organiza
tions.” The Black Ink and The Black Student Movement
would like to congratulate Vince and Melanie on their
achievement and wish them well during their reign.
