wm. FA Jai Jennings asks a question to the Mr. and Ms. BSM candidates VA; "What are the pros and cons of holding this position?" TC: "Well, the pros out-weight the cons. Being Mr. BSM, I am able to be a leader in the black community on campus, and pres ent a positive image for my peers. However, I feel a con is people may expect too much." VA: "What advice would you give oth ers who many want to pursue this posi tion?" TC: "Continue to stay strong with the BSM and be positive. They should present themselves in a positive manner because image is very important as far as actions and the way others perceive you. Also, stay active in the BSM and meet and talk to people." VA: "And finally, what do you think of your winning mate?" TC: I think very highly of Sundarkia, along wih the rest of the candidates. She is very focused and I'm proud to have won alongside her. And the Winner Is . Sundarkia Newman SN: "Well, as Ms. BSM, I plan to form a connection between minorities and faculty, focusing on issues concerning minorities on campus. VA: "What are your plans after Carolina?" SN: "I plan to attend graduate school, but I'm not sure where just yet." VA: "How would you describe your experience with the competition and the BSM?" SN: "It's been a good experience because I've gotten the chance to express myself to the general body. BSM is home - it is the first organization I joined hear at Carohna. VA: "How do you feel about winning?" SN: "Very happy and honored." VA: I know that you had to run against some of your close friends, how did that feel?" SN: It was kind of hard, but our relationship is strong enough to withstand that." VA: "What are the pros and cons of holding this position, if any?" SN: "There are both pros and cons. You are always in the spot light, you have to maintain your dignity, and you're just always on guard. VA: "Why do you feel that you best represent the black female student body?" SN: "The main thing is I'm very open- minded and people can always count on me to do things in their best interest." VA: "OK, and how do you feel about your winning mate?" SN: "TC. and I have been best friends from day one!" VA: It's kind of ironic that you're now sharing this together. SN: "Yes, it's because great minds think alike." Sundarkia is a 21-year-old senior bio medical engineering major. She is from Wilmington, N.C. She is involved with the National Society of Black Engineers, CONcEpts of Colors and the Celebration of Black Womanhood. She serves as CBW s chair. VA: "What are your future plans as Ms. BSM?"
