GC Celebrates its 30th With Style ana Praise By Vida Avvumey This year marks 30tli anniversary of the Gospel Choir and on Nov. 11, 2001, the choir gave their 30th anniversary concert in the Great Hall. Ever>’ seat in the room was tilled, leaving others to stand up in order to watch the festivities. All attendee's were dressed in his or her best Sunday attire ready to hear some gospel singing. Families, friends, children, stu dents and of course alumni (since it was homecoming weekend) from all around the triangle area and e\en from out of town came to give their support of the cel ebration. The Kirksey family drove 30 minutes from Raleigh to come and see their son, sophomore and musician, Tacque Kirksey do his thing with the band. At the closing of the ceremony, they said that they really enjoyed it and were glad they came. Also there to give supptirt for her daughter, Chessa Huff, as well as the accomplishments of the Gospel Choir, was one of the founding members, Denise Williams 1 hiff from Charlotte. Among the many UNC students to come to view this spectacular event was Jomoke Blaize, who heard about the concert through a friend and decided to come see the show. Even more compelling was the attendance of Israeli exchange student, Anat Keinan, who saw a poster of the event in a resi dence hall bulletin board and decided to come. She says she has loved gospel music ever since the first time she heard it in Italy. Wow! Gospel music is even embraced in other continents! At the beginning of the concert, audience members were present ed with brief songs of worship by the gospel choir 2001-2002 Executive Board, which included President Tamra C. Thomas and choir director, Christopher J. Cooper. They sang songs such as 'O come, let us adore him" and "I Get Joy" to get the show moving and the audience in "gospel mode." But upon emcee Pastor Shawn D. Lipscomb's words, "Ya'll ready to have some church up in here?" the room was filled with cheers, claps, and music; a true concert had begun. His presence just lit up the room even more. The UNC Gospel Choir gave an aspiring introduction leading to their respective place on the stage with their engaging dance sequence. Each member came dancing down the aisle with style filled with the love for Jesus. It was very entertaining and the audience members were pleased with what they were seeing. People getting up out of their seats and singing along with the choir proved the 7 Black INK
