Spring Quarter ’76
Now is the time to oil your softball gloves, restring your tennis
rackets, cl^n your golf clubs and tune up your overall recreational
desires. Spring is here! Intramural sports at Gaston College have
devised a specialized and diversified program just for you this
spring. Activities range from team activities to dual sports to
individual activities to a good old fashion family cookout sports
day.
The tennis courts should be well utilized this quarter with eleven
sections of tennis being taught and five special tournaments being
offered. Each tournament will be a double elimination affair, with
novice and advanced divisions separating the distinct ability
levels. To start the season off a singles tourney for men and women
is organizing right now with the entry deadline being Thursday,
March 25th. Men and Women doubles action gets under-way
shortly with the entry deadline set for April 1st. Mixed doubles play
should start around the middle of April.
Softball leagues formen and for women are now being organized.
We are looking for 10 member teams to compete in a round robin
league. Individuals who do not have a team to play with are en
couraged to register with the Intramural Sports Office so that they
can be placed on a team. Entry deadline for formation of this
league is Thursday, March 25th, with a meeting scheduled for 11
a.m. on Thursday in room S-201.
Golf activity will take the form of three separate tournaments.
On Thursday, March 25th, entry deadline is set for a Scotch
Doubles Tourney. This is partner play, a man and a woman,
competing as a team, alternating shots to compile their best score.
Later on in the quarter we will have a Men’s Open Tourney and a
Faculty-Student partner event.
Gaston Bridge Club will again be active this quarter with two
meetings planned. The first meeting will take place on Friday,
April 2nd at 7:30 p.m. in the Industrial Building Bridge Parlor.
Faculty, students and friends are invited to take part. Remember
the club is for beginners as well as accomplished players. Refresh
ments will be served. Please notify our office as to your intentions
for this evening activity. Second meeting is set for Friday, April 30.
Information regarding other activities this quarter will appear in
later editions of the Gas Light. Information and registration for
upcoming activities may be obtained by calling the Intramural
Office, 922-3136 ext. 331, or come by office RmS-211. Don’t wait too

Now, thanks to a relatively
new program offered by the
Army, students at Gaston
College can become Second
Lieutenants in the United States
Army after only two years of
Army ROTC instead of the
customary four years. Students
who qualify attend a six-week
ROTC Basic Camp at Fort
Knox, Kentucky after their
junior and senior years. The
Basic Camp qualifies the
student for the Advanced
Course. The program, known
as the Two-Year Army ROTC
Program, is designed primarily
for community and junior
college graduates however
students of four-year colleges
who did not take ROTC during
their first two years may
participate. Gaston College
Students who attend Basic
Camp may complete the Ad
vanced Course through a cross
enrollment agreement with,
Davidson College. Interested
students may apply for one of
the three Basic Camp cycles
planned for this summer. The
Boy Scouts
Aid Elders
(CPS) - America may soon
be on a starvation diet of daily
good deeds, if membership in
the Boy Scouts continues to
plummet.
New figures from Boy Scout
world headquarters in North
Brunswick, New Jersey show
that troop strength was cut by
nearly half a million in 1975,
continuing a three-year trend.
Since 1972, the Scouts have lost
1.2 million members, dropping
current membership to 3.9
million young boys and, yes,
girls, who are now admitted to
Boy Scout Explorer chapters.
“We don’t like to say it’s the
pill, but families are getting
progressively smaller,” says
Russ Bufkins, a Boy Scout
spokesman.
To beef up troop strength,
Scout leaders are working on
what they call a “five year
plan” that is designed to take up
where the current “Boypower”
recruiting program left off.
“Boypower,” launched in 1968,
ran into substantial problems
when some Scout leaders were
caught falsifying membership
records.
first cycle will be from 28 May
to 8 July 1976. The second cycle
will be from 11 June to 22 July
1976. The third cycle will be
from 16 July to 26 August 1976.
The deadline for applications
will be 15 March for the first
cycle, 1 April for the second
cycle and 15 April for the third
cycle - the earlier the ap
plication the better, however.
Women may attend the second
cycle and should submit ap
plications by 1 March 1976.
Attendees will receive ap
proximately $542 for the six-
week Basic Camp plus travel
pay and subsequently in the
Advanced Course, $100 per
academic month. In addition,
while in Basic Camp, students
may compete for Two-Year
ROTC Scholarships which will
be awarded to approximately
one of each twenty-three
students. These scholarships
cover tuition, fees, books, and
equipment, plus the $100 per
month each advanced course
student receives.
To qualify for the Basic
Camp, a student must be a
rising junior in good standing,
be physically and mentally
qualified, be of good moral
character, and be at least 17
years of age but not over 26
years of age.
Interested students should
contact the ROTC Department
at Davidson CbUege for further
details.

New Procedure
To Follow LRC
The staff of the Learning
Resources Center announced on
March 9, 1976 that there would
be a new procedure to follow for
print-outs from the Microfilm
Reader-Printers. Beginning
March 11, a charge of 10 cents
per page will be made for all
print-outs from the microfilm
reader-printers. The staff asks
that all students, faculty, and
staff make payment at the
Circulation Desk after making
copies from microfilm. This
change in procedure was
brought about because of the
cutback in allocation of funds
for supplies through the State
budget.
Graduation Exercises
At the February 26 meeting of
the Student Government
Association, Doug Arthurs
recommended that Father
Bradley of Belmont Abbey
College and Reverend J.W.
Stiles of the Wesleyan
Methodist Church in
Cherryville to be the par
ticipants in the 1976 graduation
exercises. On March 17, 1976,
the SGA informed the Gaslight
editors that Father Bradley will
be commencement speaker and
Reverend Stiles will give the
invocation and benediction.
Spring Quarter
Enrollment for the Spring
Quarter of 1976 after drop-add
was reported at 2863 students by
Mr. Bruce Trammell, Registrar
at Gaston. This is 26 students
less than the previous quarter
(Winter 75-76). Yet, this is an
increase over the Spring
Quarter of 1975 in which 2844
students were enrolled after
drop-add. This is an increase of
19 students over last year’s
figures.
May Weekend
Plans for May-Weekend are
now underway by the Student
(Government Association. Read
in later Issues of the GASLIGHT
for more news concerning these
events to take place for all
Gaston College Students.
