FLOYD CROWNED QUEEN
Two days out of the week,
Donna Floyd begins her day at
4:30 a.m. so she can be at work
at 6:45.
Four nights a week, she helps
teach Emergency Medical
Technician classes.
Doesn’t sound like the life of a
beauty queen, eh?
Twenty-one-year-old Donna
Floyd is both a nurse and the
new 1977 Miss Gaston College.
On chilly Feb. 25 during a
dance in the studeat center,
Donna was ^crowned the new
college queen, much to her own
surprise,
“I was in a daze,” she said.
■‘I was really happy - I really
was. 1 just looked up at Mike
and said, ‘Me?’ ”
Mike Terres of Shelby was
Miss Floyd’s escort.
Donna said she was ‘‘scared
and excited” the day of the
pageant. ‘‘I’d worked all week
getting posters made and put up
until 1 was really ready for the
pageant,” she said.
She said she didn’t feel that
she had a chance of winning
because she didn’t know many
people outside the nursing
program.
“I have met more people and
made more new friends through
the pageant,” Donna said.
“Many people I don’t even know
come up to me to offer their
congratulations.”
Miss Floyd, a native of
Lawndale, N. C., is studying for
an associate degree in nursing.
She is also a licensed practical
nurse at Cleveland Memorial
Hospital in Shelby.
She was working as a
secretary at Cleveland
Memorial when she became
interested in nursing after
coming in contact with the
nurses and patients.
After encouragement from
the other nurses, Donna decided
to take up her own career in
nursing.
She received her practical
nursing degree from Cleveland
Technical Institute and then
enrolled in the Gaston College
nursing program.
Miss Floyd hopes to continue
her nursing education at the
ii'iiversity of Tsrolina at

Student Government Corner
The SGA sponsored dance and pageant was a great success. We
congratulate Donna Floyd, Miss Gaston College, 1977. We feel the
dance and pageant was a great success. There was more school
spirit shown during this time than we have seen in a while. A big
“thank you” for those responsible for the dance and the pageant.
Also a special thanks for all the beautiful girls and handsome guys
who ran for the title of Mr. Gaston College.
You may have seen some change in registration this quarter. In
hopes to make registration a little easier, members of the student
government were asked to help work in different positions during
registration. This was a successful adventure and we hope to be
helping in all registrations from now on. Regular registration will
be held in the Myers Center in April and there will be no more
registration in the L.R.C. says John Morris, registrar.
Elections for new officers of the S.G.A. will be held the last week in
April. We encourage any student who will be attending Gaston for
the next year and carrying 8 or more hours each quarter to give some
thought to running for president, vice-president, secretary, and
treasurer. More info about those offices are in the student handbook
for anyone interested. Each new officer will receive a $300.00
scholarship.
Plans for spring week, being held in May, are coming along very
well. If you have any good ideas let us know...
See you around campus
Butch Boyd, Treasurer, SGA
