Campus Mews Page Two Center Named, Church Offers Bid From Staff Reports The Gaston College Trustees decided recently to name the college’s new health- science building for Lena Sue Beam, the wife of college trustee C. Grier Beam, a substantial college benefactor. The $938,853 building, scheduled for completion the spring of 1984, is being built with private contributions. The Beams were the anonymous benefactor of two fund drives that had become bogged down earlier in the year. The Beams had contributed more than $100,000 anonymously two months ago when funding for the health- science building slowed down. Over the years, the Beam family and their Chenyville-based Carolina Freight Carriers Crop., have contributed over $570,000 to the college in stock, land and cash, including a $250,000 “challenge gift” in 1972 to be used for the college building fund. In a related action, Gaston College received its first bid on the old Garrison Center. First Baptist Church, located on Franklin Blvd next to the Center offered $175,000 for the four- story, 20,370 square-foot brick building and property on which its sits. TTie Garrision Center, formerly a hospital, was vacant for two years before being turned over to Gaston College to house classes for adult education and high school dropouts. The classes have now been moved back on campus. First Baptist is interested in using the 190- space paring lot in back of the building and in using the building for youth, senior citizens and recreation programs. Gaston plans to use the money from the sale to help pay the cost of the health-science building. Continued From Page One Karen Karen is a computer lab assistant here at Gaston while she works on her Computer Science major. This is quite a switch for someone who was a Dance Education major when she attended the University of North Carolina at Greenboro. This is her last year at Gaston College. She hopes to continue her education though, possibly with night school. Karen has been a very active student. She is a member of the Student Government Association, the Computer Science Club and Ganuna Beta Phi. Her new title has introduced her to more people around campus, and according to her, “I’ve met a lot more people here since the pageant. People come up and kid around and joke a lot.” The students on campus haven’t been as bad about kidding her as her own family. “They started calling me ‘queeny’ around the house,” she said. What does the future hold for Karen? Well, for one thing, she wants a career in the computer field. “I would like to start out in the computer field and work with people through the use of computers,” she said. There’s another big step in her future plans. She is about to add a ‘kin^’ in her life — she’s engaged to be married. No date has been set. And as for other pageants, Karen said there is a possibilty that she will enter those too. “I never had thought of being in a pageant before. ” Now she knows what to expect. SGA Shorts Convention Held By Steve Nation Gaslight SGA Reporter The N4C-SGA Winter Convention met recently for an interesting and informative session. The Specific Problems and Minorities Committee, of which I am a member, met in the afternoon and we, as a committee, were introduced to the concept and methods of networking. Using a seminar-like approach, this business used considerable time. During the general assemblies, much time was used to deliberate the N4CSGA’s stand on the proposed tuition increase to be presented this term before the North Carolina General Assembly.
