DECEMBER, 1944 SARDNER-WEBB PILOT PAGE 3 Reception For New Faculty The new members of the faculty were honored October 26 at a reception given in the living room of Curtis-Hug- gins hall. Guests were greeted at the door by Miss Jennie Smith, history professor, and J. T. Jones, jr., president of the sophomore class, who pres ented tnem to Miss Dorothy Smith, director of physical education. Miss Smith intro duced guests to the line com posed 01 ir’resident and Mrs. Jr’nilip Liovin Elliott, Dean G. H. Sullivan, Miss Frances Cuthbertson, dean of women; W. Lawson Allen, director of church-school relations, and Mrs. Allen; Mr. and Mrs. James Harris, the latter dieti cian and home economics in structor; Miss Betsy Jane Fuller, voice instructor; and Holt McPherson, professor of journalism. The Rev. J. L. Jenkins and Mrs. Jenkins directed guests to the adjoining room where refreshments were served. The table, overlaid with a handsome Madeira and lace cutwork cloth, held as a cen terpiece an arrangement of lovely red roses in a crystal bowl. Tall white tapers in crystal candelabra graced either end of the table. Mrs. Hubert C. Dixon and Mrs. F. T. Johnson presided at the punch bowl, and fruit punch, cake, and ice cream were serv ed by Miss Lilia Watkins, and Miss Elma Harper. Receiving in the music room were Miss Carolyn Wray and Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Love lace. Sam Green, jr., baritone, and Miss Abbie Miller, pian ist, rendered a musical pro gram throughout the even ing. Davidson and Mrs. Davidson said good- NEW FACULTY MEMBERS LIBRARY NEWS The physical equipment of the Washburn Memorial Li brary has been greatly im proved by the installation of a new stove in the past few weeks. The library has also been rearranged for the conven ience of the librarian, as well as the students. There have been some fif ty-five new books recently added in the fields of science, history, home economics, French, music, and some fic tion. We are expecting more new books soon, but because of the holiday rush, they were not sent as soon as usual. Some especially good read ing is “The Nazarene” and “The Apostle”, by Sholem MR. C. H. C. Miss Cuthbertson has been on our campus four years and has won the love and admiration of every student that has had the opportunity to know her. Since she came to Gard ner Webb she has been con nected with the English De partment. This year she is not only teaching English but is holding the position of Dean of Women.
