THE PILOT GARDNER-WEBB COLLEGE TUESDAY, MAY 13, 1969 BOILING SPRINGS, NORTH CAROLINA May Day ’69 — A Memorable Event Crowned Queen of May - Miss Carolyn Stone Peeler Spearheads SGA work with the college news bur eau in 1969-70. It’s apparently the year of the “Richard M’s” in elections. Gardner-VVebb College students taking a cue from the nation, found their own Richard M. in a huskey, former vice-presi dent named Peeler. Richard M. Peeler, a start ing tackle on the college foot ball team and an aggressive, hard-working vice president, won the election over contend ers Reg Alexander of Kings Mountain and Jerry Ruppe of Forest City. The new president fromAsh- burn, Va., is a rising junior and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Van B. Peeler. This will be the first junior class in the former jun ior college which is now mov ing to senior status. The student body elected Lar ry Joe Thomas of North Au gusta, S. C., as vice-president and Katherine (Kay) Johnson Anthony of Rt. 2, Greensboro, as secretary-treasurer. Thomas, the son of Rev. and Mrs. Herman L. Thomas, is an honor student who served this year as president of Phi Theta Kappa. He was manager of the basketball team and will Miss Anthony, thedaughterof Mr. and Mrs. James B. Anthonj' of Greensboro, served this year as president of Stroupe Resi dence Hall and worked with the Student Union Concert Series. She is a member of Alpha Nu Omega, the interclub council. In making their campaign speeches to the student body, the newly elected officers told students of their plans, if el ected. A major promise was that they would work for the student to bring about a smooth trans ition to senior college level. Topic of major concern men tioned by the winning candidate for president was the revision of the present constitution, ad vocating a liberalization of pre sent social rules at Gardner- Webb. The winning vice-presiden tial candidate promised stu dents that his first concern was them and his efforts would be directed to the area which would affect the most students. He told the student body that he and other officers could do nothing unless the student body was concerned and cooperated with the student government. The secretary-treasurer says that intracampus commun ications should be improved and she pledged to work toward this goal. She also called for more student representation in policy making areas of the college. These student officers will lead the Gardner-Webb student body during a year of transi tion and their abilities and leadership qualities will be helpful in making the change to senior college status. Under The Big-Top A bright sun beat down as circus music flowed across the campus. The doors of Hamrick opened, and a parade of bright ly clad performers poured forth. May Day 1969, “Under the Big Top” had begun. It was the climax of hours spent in the traditional stuffing of toilet paper and practicing of dance routines. Formally opening the pro gram was the crowning of Ca rolyn Stone as Queen of the day’s activities. Attending her as Maid of Honor was sopho more Ginger Weaver. Entertainment for the Queen took place in the two circus rings under a red, white, and blue 0. M. G. big top. The girls dorms came through as usual with their unique acts. Stroup’s “Animal Carousel” took the shape of a merry-go- round, and the “Strange Peo ple” of Hapy put on the trophy winning performance of the day. Despite the fact of a slight fire hazard and a few pre-show get-aways, Nanney’s gas-filled balloons gave G. W.’s May Day a new look. Other entertain ment included “The Clowns” (the day students), knife twirl ing, fire twirling, acrobatics, and the freshmen P. E. girls’ Maypole Dance. The Queen’s Court and their escorts were Susan Arrington, Laura Day, Karen Hayes, Kelly Saunders, Susan Fisher, Marilyn New ton, Cindy Ruppe and Paulette Ringmaster Ed Solomon and Lynn Griggs, the Spirit of Cir cus, called the acts to a close. Up, Up and Away - Nanney adds a special touch. Then the circus recessional backed up the center widewalk, leaving a trail of flower pe tals, chicken wire, confetti, and balloon strings.
