BULLDOG SPORTS
by Ken Com
The Gardner-Webb College Bulldog basketball team has
progressed into another great year. As of January 18, 1975
their record is 17 wins and 1 loss.
The team has already exceeded all expectations of what
some reports projected. Many people thought, with the
loss of John Drew, the team would be lacking in a high
scorer. But even with this loss, the team has still become
Bulldog Jim Blanks against USC-Aiken.
more balanced and the scoring attack has four players
averaging in double figures.
Jim Blanks, Alvin Jones, John Searight, and Donnie
Foster, those averaging in double figures, have been the fo
cal point on which the team’s success has depended.
Blanks, Jones, and Searight are averaging around 18
points each, with Searight being the leading rebounder.
EUis and Foster have been instrumental in leading the
Bulldog attack at the guard positions. Their quickness and
hustle has added that big difference needed to win.
George White, a transfer student from Columbia State,
has proven his worth on the court by averaging 10 points a
game. His game experience began at the first of this
month.
Doug Turner, Lester Stinson, Gene Bowen, John Fait,
along with White, have been valuable in their back-up posi
tions of the starting five bulldogs.
The BiuUdog offense is averaging 96.8 points a game
while opponents are averaging 74.8 points a game. The
’Dogs had a season high of 120 points against Warren-Wil-
son and then the following game they had a season low of
59 points against UNC-A.
The Bulldogs will be facing one of their toughest oppo
nents tonight as they face the Catawba Indians at Salis
bury. The Indians are led by Herman Miles and Eric Har
ris. Miles scored 25 points against the ’Dogs here and Har
ris, an All-State Performer at West Charlotte High School,
had 29 points.
Gardner-Webb defeated Catawba, here, by the score of
91-84, in a very hard fought game in which Catawba led at
the half by five points.
The Bulldog basketball team, cheerleaders, and the Bull
dogs Club will be leaving Saturday, January 25, after a
2:00 afternoon game with St. Mary for Rio de Janeiro, Bra
zil. The team will play three games in a Round Robin
Tournament and return to Boiling Springs on February 2,
1975.
