In memorial services at Boiling Springs Baptist Church, Dr. Lewis was described as “a dreamer and a fighter,” and “humble but strong.” Dr. Lewis had been a member of the Gardner- Webb faculty since 1964. He served as Dean of Instruc tion for three years, 1966-69, before resigning that posi tion to return to the class room. He was co-founder of the Christian Service Founda tion, a scholarship fund aid ing students preparing for full-time Christian voca tions, and was instrimiental in establishing a chair of Biblical Languages and Semetic Studies in order to bring the best possible pro fessor of these subjects to the college. Dr. Lewis donated his body to the Bowman-Gray School of Medicine in Win ston-Salem. “His faith in the Lord sus tained him in his life of teaching and preaching, wit nessing and working. His faith enabled him to live vic toriously in the face of pain, suffering and death,” the Rev. T. Max Linnens stated during the service. A few words from the an them which he chose to be sung at his memorial service emphasizes his faith: “In death’s dark vale I fear no ill, With Thee, dear Lord, beside me; Thy rod and staff my comfort still. Thy cross before to guide me." Of Dr. Lewis, the Rev. Linnens also said, “He had the ability to see the poten tial in his students and to dare them to see what he saw. This man was sensi tive, with a finely honed ethical sense and stance of integrity.” There is a saying that as long as a person is remem bered by his loved ones, that in a sense, he never really dies.
