THURSDAY, MAY 10,1979 G-W Hires New Football Coach . Tenmsjeam Trackteam Ends Successful Season The 1979 Bulldog Track Team ended the season placing 5th (out of 13 teams) in the District 26 meet behind Pem broke State, St. Augustine, Fayetteville State, and High Point. GW had two champions in this meet, Bobby Hopkins and David Underhill. The team, coached by first year coach Mike Whitely, was greatly improved over last year’s track team. This year’s team had a record of 3-1 in dual meets. In the Davidson relays the Bulldogs finished ahead of teams like High Point, Wake Forest, Davidson, Presbyter ian, Lenoir-Rhyne, Catawba, and fifteen other teams. Vir ginia Tech won the Davidson Relays, while G-W finished 16th. The Bulldog Invitational was captured by Elon, with G- W finishing fifth out of nine participating. Since the track team is rarely given the credit deserved, the members of this year’s squad are listed: Charles Harbi- son, Lanky WilUams, Jim Wiseman, Todd Medlin, Bobby Hopkins, Randy Page, John Smith, Chris Johnson, Tyrone Alexander, Coley Malsfy, and seniors Marvin Oliver, Alan Paige, Jake Underwood, David Underhill, Obbie Todd, and David Cribb. The G-W football team is now imder the leadership of Thomas Moore, who replaced BiUy Kinard. Moore is the third head coach in as many years. Billy Kinard resigned his position to become the Defen sive Secondary Coach for the New England Patriots. Before coming to Gardner-Webb, Kinard coached at the NFL’s Cleveland and Green Bay, along with a head coaching job at Mississippi University. Thomas Moore was an assistant coach at Clemson Uni versity for the past nine years. Moore, age 34, is a former assistant at Wichita State and was an All-Southern split end at the Citadel. He was team captain for the Citadel in 1966. Coach Moore is a native of Dayton, Ohio, and played on the same high school team as quarterback Joe Namath. Coach Moore was chosen from the 87 applicants for the G-W position. Among other things, he plans to stress aca demics. It has been said that, in Moore’s nine years at Clem son, only one player did not graduate, and he came back. Dr. Hunt Named Volleyball Coach Dr. Delores (Dee) Himt, associate professor of Health and Physical Education, has been named women’s volleyball coach at G-W. She succeeds Phyllis Littlefield, coach of both ladies’ basketball and volleyball, who recently resign ed. In an interview with the Pilot, Dr. Hunt stated, “In the first year or two, we are going to work very hard on basic fundamental volleyball. When our skill improves, we wiU de velop it from there. I am excited about the upcoming year. In summing up her objectives for the coming year. Dr. Himt noted two basic goeds. The first goal is for the ladies to prepare themselves as students for their professions. The second goal is for the ladies to gain all of the good things that they can from participating in athletics. In relation to this goal, Dr. Hunt added, “We love to win, and will do our best to win, but the experiences received from athletics mean a lot more than winning. The Intramural Scene For the first time, the Intramural Department had a part in Awards Day. Intramural Director, Dr. David Gardner, presented the aweirds. Dr. Robert Knott and Dr. Bob Black burn were recognized for their support and encouragement to the Intramural Program. Mark Polk and Malinda Child ers were given special attention for their dedicated service as the Intramiu'al Assistants for the past two years. The 1978-79 Intramural year was a tremendous success. The events which highlighted the year were football, bask etball, softball, tennis, turkey trot, golf, handball, and vol leyball. Intramural Basketball and Volleyball Champs First Floor Decker-Basketball Champs The Trailers—Basketball Champs Campus House-Volleyball Winners 3rd Floor Lutz-Yelton-Volleyball Champs Playing a rugged sche dule, the tennis team com piled a respectable 9 emd 11 record. All of the G-W play ers drew a top seed in the district tennis tournament and all were defeated in the first round. Atlantic Christ ian won the District title. David Seagroves had the best individual season re cord playing in the nxmiber three single position and won 12 matches and lost 7. Baseball Team Finishes Tough Year The baseball team finish ed the ye£ir 5 and 14 overall, and 5 and 5 in the District. The team had a disastrous start, losing their first seven games. With a young and in experienced squad, the team took their lumps. A bright spot for Coach Jerry Bry son’s team was Mfirtin Riv- ens. Rivens was second in District 26, with about a .450 batting average. The only seniors on the team are Dennis StiUey emd Martin Rivens. G-W Golfers Win District 26 Title The G-W Bulldog Golfers, under the direction of Dr. Garland Allen, have won the District 26 Title. The Bull dogs advance to the Nation al Tourney, June 5-8, at Guilford College in Greens boro (at the Cardinal Coun try Club.) District 26 includes all of the NAIA colleges of North Carolina. The golf team will be playing in their fifth straight NAIA National Tournament. The Bulldogs won the Tournament in 1976 and 1977, and finished sixth in 1978. This Tournament will be an opportunity for seniors Wayne Myers and Steve Sherman to become All-Americans for the sec ond time. Bronlynn Bodey Bronlynn Bodey, from Gastonia, N.C., participated in an unusual independent study this semester under the supervision of Mrs. Bet- tye Carpenter. Before em barking on the study, she had to prepare a rationale and submit it for approval by the department head and the dean. After careful research on the history of student assis tants, learning how to oper ate a-v equipment, and con ducting a small experiment, Bronl50in taught a unit on mate selection to the 9:00 section of Mrs. Carpenter’s developmental psychology class. “I chose that unit be cause it was relevant to me and I thought it would be interesting for them, too,” she said. Bronlynn hopes to enter social work or personnel work upon graduation this May. Looking back on the study, she says, “It was a lot of work, but it really helped me. I’m glad I did
