Page 6 Risky Business Or Just Another Club? By Alex Sheek Do you love the out doors? Would you enjoy canoeing, white-water raf ting, or exploring caves? If you have interests similar to these or are just in terested in being out-of- doors then you may want to join the Outdoor Ex plorer’s Club! The Outdoor Explorers Club, previously called the Science Club has been thought to be strictly open to Science majors. It is not. All students are welcome to join. Since January the club has gone on 3 rappelling trips, two canoe trips, and a backpacking trip. These trips are often held locally at sites such as Crowder’s Mountain but the club has been known to take trips to the coast and the moun tains also. Most of the trips are financed by work done by club members, member ship dues, and other sources. The Science Club has contributed funds for the Memorial Wildflower Garden near the Boiling Springs in order to enhance its present condition. Membership dues are on ly $2.50 per semester and the club is open to all Gardner-Webb students and faculty. The 1986 Gardner-Webb baseball team jumped out to their best start in nine years winning five of their first seven games behind outstanding hitting. They opened their season with an impressive 7-1 victory over the tough Winthrop Eagles with Jack Moore gaining the com plete game victory. Keith Bridges gained the com plete game victory as Jeff Spargo and Gary Cox sup plied the hitting punch. The Dawgs defeated Wesleyan again by the score of 15-9. Joey Moss, Tim Danyels, and Jeff Spargo all rapped out two hits. Gardner-Webb was defeated by Erskine 9-3 but the Bulldogs rebound ed with a 8-7 victory over Newberry. Jack Moore gained his second victory and Scott Lee supphed three hits. Gardner-Webb then suffered through a 25-9 loss to the Furman Paladins, an NCAA com petitor. Once again the Bulldogs rebounded with a victory as they defeated uses 12-7. Robbie Sparks won his first game and Jeff Spargo continued his hot hitting with three against the Rifles. Gardner-Webb traveled to Wofford and the Terriers took advan tage of a small field to defeat the Bulldogs 11-6. Once again the Bulldogs rebounded with an extiging 11-6 district victory over Pfeiffer. The Dawgs pounded out 17 hits in sup port of Jack Moore and he gained his third victory of the season. They traveled to High Point and lost 10-5. St. Vincent frp, Penn sylvania traveled to Boiling Springs and the Dawgs sent them home smarting after a 15-9 thrashing. The home team ripped St. Vin cent pitching for 21 hits to give Clint Wiles his first victory. Gardner-Webb came up against another NCAA foe and were defeated 11-7. The troops traveled to Guilford and suffered a double-header loss at the hands of the Quakers. The Wingate Bulldogs came into town and split a doubleheader with Gardner-Webb. Wingate won the first game 10-0 and the Dawgs rebounded with a 10-0 vic tory of their own. Jack Moore stiffled the Wingate bats allowing only two hits and earning his fourth vic tory without a defeat.
