Page 7 Speaking Of Sports by Jeff Melton, Sports Editor Resignation When I volunteered for this job of sports editor last summer, I made a promise to the editor, Roberta Borden, to you, the student body, and to myself that I would do my best to adequately cover the sports program here at Gard- ner-Webb. To myself, I further promised that if ever a time came when I might not be able to fulfill that duty, I would step aside and let someone else have the chance. Well, the time has come for me to do just that. The reasons for this decision are well-founded. I, like all seniors on this campus, want nothing more than to graduate. For me to pull that off, I must complete two internships, which are currently consuming the majority of my time. In other words, I have bit off more than I can chew. I have great confidence in the abil ities of Clint Wiles and Bei-t Wilson, who will now carry out the responsibil ities of sports reporting. Clint will give you the inside scoop on baseball, while Burt, I’m sure, can cover the rest. Both are Communications majors, and are capable of doing the job. Though my scribbling will never again grace these pages, my hope is that you readers will get behind this paper more in the future. You are the newsmakers and the trendsetters. The Pilot is a good thing now, but you can make it better. Roberta has done an excellent job the last three years, making this paper what it is today. Do me a favor, if you like what she has done, let her know about it. In closing, I would like to thank Hank Garrity, Dr. Dee Hunt, Dr. Jeff Tubbs, Ozzie McFarlane, and all the teams that I’ve covered for the input. If I have upset anyone for something that I’ve written, I apologize. I would also like to thank the Pilot staff,es pecially Roberta and Dr. Stowe for af fording me this opportunity. Here’s wishing each of you all the best. 1 Team Gets Ball Rolling Next year, Gard- ner-Webb will field its first-ever soc cer team. Bulldog alum Tim Davis will be directing the efforts of the team which already has 12 interested pros pects . Athletic Director Hank Garrity said that nine matches had been scheduled against District 26 opponents, most of which will be play ed away. The present group will participate in an indoor league in order to have their skills for next season. Davis, who held a G-W place-kicking record in football, is already involved in local recruiting efforts. Davis also has an interest in starting a women’s soccer team in ’88. Players Preview B-ball Season by Clint Wiles and Brett Bridges This year’s Bulldog Baseball team has the potential to contend strongly for a berth in the District 26 playoffs. The majority of the team is made up of vet eran players who either started or saw much playing time last year. The pitching staff consists of three returnees. They are Keith Bridges, Ric hard Ivey and Robbie Sparks. The in field is made up of veterans including Jeff Allred, Mike Cheek, Kirk Dotson, Steve Matheny, Mickey Milleman, Tommy Turner,Nelson Whitaker, Monte Whitener, and Clint Wiles. This infield is also strengthened by transfer John Johnson from Spartanburg Methodist College, and new-comers Brad Hinson, Robert Stokely and Pete Tuck. The outfield is made up of all re turning players. These include Brett Bridges, Scott Lee, Joey Moss, Will Rogers, Jeff Spargo and Nathan Wriston. Bulldog head coach Ozzie McFarland has had an exceptional recruiting year especially at the pitching position with the acquisition of freshmen play ers Greg Comer, Dan Flowers, Steve Marsh, Joel Moore and Tom Plaster, who also doubles as a forward on Jim Wiles’ basketball team. Coach McFarland has not only acquired new players but also a new assistant coach. Mike Mathis is helping Coach Mc Farland by giving his valuable time and baseball knowledge to the team. The key to this year's team lies within the pitching staff. With a forty game schedule, the Bulldogs will be tested game after game by such peren nial district powers as Elon, High Point, and Pembroke St. The Bulldogs also play such NCAA teams as Wake For est, Furman, and Davidson. The season opener for the Bulldogs is Feb. 25 at home against Central Wesley an, after that only time will tell if the Bulldog’s expectations will be re alized . Team Loses To Grades The 1987 wrest ling season has been scrapped be cause academic dif ficulties of some of its members. Hank Garrity, Gard- ner-Webb’s athetic director, said three of the wrest lers seated to form the nucleus of the squad, encountered academic difficul ties, and were placed on proba tion . Garrity says the team will wrestle on a club circuit this year "so that the participants will have the feel for competition next year." There are various college clubs throughout the area. Garrity did not specify which wres tlers were inelig ible, but stated his intention "to have this team and other teams at Gardner-Webb return to a higher level of competitive ness. Give a hoot. Don’t pollute. Forest Service, U.S.D.A.
