The Pilot, Page 4 Promo Film Made From October 25 through October 31, one activity stood out more than any other on campus. The activity was the filming of a promotional film which will be shown to pro spective students. Using the theme, "Gardner-Webb is a people place", the film will reflect all aspects of life here at Gardner-Webb: dorm life, classroom life, student activities, faculty, and much more. Sites for the filming ranged from the cafeteria to classrooms to sports fields. The basic format of the film was done similar to that of the many PM magazine-type shows. The two hosts, GWC students Tiffany Davis and Todd Smith, serve as narrators for an indepth tour of Gardner-Webb. The film in cludes both action shots and still photography and features a music video which provides an overview of life here at Gardner-Webb. Mr. John Brock, director of public events for the college, is the executive producer of the film. He, along with his assistant, Janet Roebuck, and the Communications Studies Department of the college were responsible for putting the film together. Ron Cook of Cook/Laughlin Productions is the associate producer. His partner Terry Laughlin is the director of the film. Frank Williams ran the technical aspects of the film as best boy. Many students helped in the filming process. Melissa Whitlow, the film's script person, said, "The film crew was very easy to work with. They were patient with us. All in all, it was a wonderful learning experience." Other Gardner-Webb students involved were Kim Harris and Kathy Burgin. John Brock wishes to extend his personal thanks to the entire Gardner-Webb family for their co-operation in the process. "Everyone was just great! And we want to thank you all." The film should be ready about the first of the year. THANKS TO ALL! The Gardner- Webb promotional film is in the can!! Gardner-Webb Seeks the Stars By Melissa Brown On October 13, Gardner-Webb formally announced plans to build an observatory on cam pus. The $107,000 project will be under way in mid-November and is expected to be comple ted in the summer of 1989. The observatory will be named after Craven Williams, the ninth president of the college who served from 1976 to 1986. Under his presidency, the goal program, the handicap program, and the graduate program were begun. The new facility will have a lecture room, audio/visual equipment, an observation room and an observation pad. It will contain one large motor- driven telescope given to the college seven years ago, four other scopes, three of which are portable and can be used on the observation pad. All of these scopes are already owned by the college. The larger telescoDes will make visible such objects as nebulae, galaxies, and detail on planets. President Chris White said, "This facility we believe will be the finest in this part of the state." Though the observatory will make changes within some of the courses that are presently offered at Gardner-Webb such as Oceanography and Astronomy, changes in curriculum are not yet foreseen. Funding for the observatory came from the Janirve Foundation of Asheville which donated $43,000 provided that the college raise an equal amount which it did through donations. It will also be available for use by other groups in cluding public and private schools. Dr. White commented, " We believe that the timing is very providential... I think the heavens are the next frontier for us." Plans for Craven Williams Observatory. President’s Corner By Tracy Jessup SGA President I feel sure that for most of us, fall break was over much too soon; however, for our vacationing pleasure. Thanksgiving break is just around the corner. Then, however, we must all face those dreadful days of final examinations. I want to congratulate the students who have participated in fall sports. The soccer team improved on last year's record and recorded the first SAC-8 victory in the two year history of soccer at Gardner- Webb. Only one match kept the volleyball team from qualify ing for the district as the women continue to build on a solid program. And the foot ball team pulled together to score a tremendous victory over the Fighting Christians of Elon College. Your SGA officers, execu tive council, and student senate are working on many things which will be of in terest to you. Fall Revival, a mock Presidential Election, and the revision of the Constitution of the Student Government Association are just a few of the projects we have undertaken. We are also looking into the possibilities of more open house hours and co-ed areas of study for those who need a place to study after the lobbies have closed. Thanks for your continued support and remember, we are here to serve YOU. Colossians 3:17.
