UPCOMING EVENTS movies ***** "Twins" March 2 "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off" March 23 "Project X" March 31 That’s Entertainment Tidal Waves By Noel T. Manning, II Entertainment Editor Question: Dear Mr. Entertainment Guy, Last week someone called me a "Block head." I later found out that meant I was stupid! and I was not a very happy person, to say the least. While drowning myself in anger I started wondering...where this term "Blockhead" came from? So, I thought you might be of some help! "Whv is a stupid person called blockhead?" ThanK "Chip Off the Old Blockhead" Answer; Well, Chip, A blockhead is not only stupid, but slow and unexciting as well (Hey, I’m sorry Pal). An idiot, for example, might be an aggres sive person who feels he is a genius. For long-standing etymological reasons, a blockhead is likely to be a schlemiel. (Get a dictionary. It’ll be useful.) Blockhead was first recorded in 1549, an it referred to wooded heads (or blocks) that were used by wig-makers to display or store their wigs. Usually made of yew or oak, most blockheads were in the shape of the human skull, but...some were rectangular. The most famous contemporary block head, of course, is Charlie Brown, The Phil Collins look-a-like from "Peanuts," and be cause his head is disproportionately large, some assume that "blockhead" refers to the size of his head. But wouldn’t "fat head" serve that function better that "blockhead"? I’ve found that Lucy isn’t criticizing him for the size of his head (after all, studies have shown that powerful people tend to have extremely large heads...Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Humpty Dumpty, Mr. Potato Head), but Lucy is maintaining that poor Charlie has the I.Q. and charisma of a...wooden block! —^0, there’s your answer, Chip!! Thanks! —Thanks also to D. Feldman for the re search! —Until our next surfin’ safari...I’m Noel T.
