SPORTS Wrestling Coach Resigns Post By Quintella Howard Staff Writer Recently GWC’s wrestling coach Greg Hutchinson resigned to take another job. Coach Hutchinson has been with GWC’s wrestling team since its conception three years ago. He was hired to form a freshman wrestling team, and, with the help of staff and dedicated members of the team, he has produced some fine individual talents. Coach Hutchinson will be unable to stay until the end of the wrestling season which ends the first weekend in March. Business opportunities will not permit him to stay. Coach Tony Setzer will take over as the wrestling coach until the end of the season. A permanent wrestling coach will be named later in the school year. Coach Hutchinson said that, in his three years at GWC, the student athletes have been hard working, dedicated, and work well as a team. He also said the staff mem bers of the sports department are great to work with and are very supportive. His only disappointment was the lack of student body support. "Once you witness a wrestling event, you will love it." The stu dents work hard and train hard; many in juries are suffered by the team members. They must train and diet constantly, risking dehydration to remain in their weight class. Trainer Kevin Jones works right along with them to keep them in good shape. The team as a whole has not had a great deal of success, but there have been some individuals to shine through. The Runnin’ Bulldogs: A Success Story By R. Shawn Lewis Managing Editor Gardner-Webb’s mens team had a very difficult season for a variety of reasons. In essence, the Runnin’ Bulldogs have suf fered through "Murphy’s" plague of every possible thing that could go wrong going wrong. The team lost three players to grades, two of them starters, and two players to injuries, depleting the roster to only 8 active players. To add even further to their problems, the active 8 were never healthy at the same time. In light of these problems, many teams would have wilted under the pressure. The Runnin’ Bulldogs were not just another team, however. This was and is a team of determined individuals, each a winner in his own way. Sure their record may not be what Gardner-Webb fans are used to seeing, but there were very few games that the team was not in. Game after game, the team took to the court knowing that it may not have the offensive guns to blow out an opponent, or to even keep up with the other team, but that did not stop the Runnin’ Bulldogs. The team did, however, have one of the finest defenses in the nation, good enough to be ranked #7 in the nation. Defense kept the Bulldogs close in many games that should have been runaway victories for their opponents. This sports fan’s hat is off for the men of Gardner-Webb’s basketball team; Seniors 117. N. Though you may not have achieved what you wanted to this season, you still did something that not many could not have: you met adversity face to face and won. No matter what the future holds for the basketball program here at Gardner-Webb College, the 1989-90 Runnin’ Bulldogs will always be remembered as winners, perhaps not on the basketball court; but on tlie court of life v/here it counts.
