It’s pretty easy for us, as college students,
to get wrapped up in our own lives and for
get that there’s a whole world outside the
walls of Gardner-Webb. We realize that
we have responsibilities to ourselves, our
friends, and our families, but we often for
get that we have responsibilities to our
country and to our world-for our sake and
the sake of the future generations.
Many of you probably think that what you
do only affects you. Well you are wrong.
You may also think that if you don’t do any
thing, you are not hurting anyone. Wrong
again! You can do just as much damage by
simply not caring.
Take the environment for example.
Every aluminum can that you throw away
could be recycled. Every Sunday
newspaper that you carelessly toss into the
trash can help save a tree. It doesn’t take
much effort to be a recycler. Does your
residence hall recycle? If you don’t know,
find out. If your dorm isn’t recychng, talk
to your RA or RD about setting up a can
box in the lobby.
Okay, the environment is one respon
sibility. Are there others? Yes. Election
Day is coming up at the first of next month.
Are you planning on voting? We have an
opportunity to make a statement about
what we think mit government should be
doing. Are we going to sit by quietly and let
others make all the decisions? You may be
saying "My vote won’t make a difference
anyway." Wrong!! If everybody had that at
titude, who would vote?? The politicians--
and they’re already making too many
decisions for us!
We have a lot of freedoms as Americans
that we take for granted. Do you neglect
your freedoms? Do you take them for
granted? I’ve written two editorials so far
this year, and, in both, I encouraged you to
write letters to the editor concerning your
feelings about Gardner-Webb or life in
general. Well, the only letters I’ve received
were from an assignment Dr. Dennis Quinn
gave his freshman Enghsh classes. While I
thank Dr. Quiim and his students, I wonder
about the rest of you out there. Do you
really not care about what’s going on? Are
you really so busy that you can’t find a few
minutes to write a short letter? This page
is for you!! I would love to hear from you,
and so would Gardner-Webb!! Let us all
know how you feel! A lot of people have
died trying to gain and trying to protect our
freedoms. Shouldn’t we at least use these
freedoms? Or do we want the ‘90’s to be
known as a decade of apathy??
Do me a favor. Whether you ever write
an editorial for The Pilot or not, take time
out and think about your freedoms. Don’t
live your life as a passive citizen. You don’t
have to protest, but you do have a respon-
sibility to vote. Don’t let America down.

Lawn Care
Hello, I am a freshman here at Gardner-
Webb and I am writing with concern about
lawn care. My concern is about a particular
tree. There is a tree next to the music build
ing which has a limb that hangs over the
sidewalk. This makes it very difficult for
some people, for you see, the limb hangs
down almost to the ground. I have noticed
that some bUnd people have trouble with
this. I am in a wheelchair and its also dif
ficult for me. This is a problem which con
cerns everyone. I hope this problem can be
resolved real soon. Thank you for your
time.
Thank you,
Elaine Guthrie
Equal Rights
Are there equal rights for all students at
GWC? The girls that live in Decker would
say no. In the handbook it says that a visitor
of the opposite sex may enter the main
lobby of each residence hall during the
hours of 12 (noon) and 12 (midnight) Mon-
day-Saturday and 12:30 p.m. to 12 (mid
night) on Sundays. If the handbook is true,
then why are Decker hours 6 p.m. to 12:00
(midnight).
Sincerely,
Tracey May
Teachers
I would Uke to commend the teachers of
GWC. They are great! They are very help
ful and do all they can to help a student pass.
Teachers are way under paid so you figure
they would teach for the love of it. These
teachers do that and also teach in a way that
they want to make a difference in the world.
I do not know they can be thanked any bet
ter than to just tell them. In your next edi
tion, just say something about how the
teachers are at GWC.
Sincerely,
Jody Wright
