On the waste...
There is one environmental problem
deeply concerning me that no one seems
to have thought about. The problem I am
referring to is the waste of paper on this
campus. The most infuriating example of
this is the placement of flyers announcing
social events, campus activities, and so
forth in each student’s mailbox.
To understand the full impact of this,
think of each time you have gone to your
box, only to find it stuffed with flyers.
What did you do with them? Probably,
you tossed them in the trash can! After
you consider that, consider this aspect:
how many bulletin boards are there on
this campus? Are they not always
overflowing with announcements, usually
the same ones printed on the flyers.
I am not condemning the public
relations committees of clubs and
organizations for their advertisements. I
understand that to have successful groups,
you must publicize accordingly. However,
we are all literate adults and are attracted
to the bulletin boards displaying
announcements. Advertising space is
sufficient in the school paper, and word of
mouth has always been the most effective
way to spread news. We need to stop this
senseless waste of paper and resort to
other means of public

On Greek Organizations...
The Greek Organizations at a college
or university are as much a part of college
life as living in a dorm or eating in the
cafeteria. Many institutions throughout
the United States have fraternities and
sororities. A school that lacks these
organizations is missing an element of the
college experience. Greek organizations
should be implemented here at
Gardner-Webb.
The Greeks provide a variety of social
life on campus. Aside from parties, these
organizations plan trips for such activities
as camping, rafting, or to the beach for
spring break. Formal dances and informal
socials are also planned by these groups.
The social life the fraternities and
sororities provide helps the campus to
remain lively because their activities
persuade people to stay on campus during
the weekend.
Many people say that having
fraternities and sororities on campus
would just cause problems and give the
campus a bad name, but part of the
Greeks’ pledge to the college and the
community is to do charitable activities.
Such activities might include picking up
trash and recycling to raise money for a
charitable organization. Alcohol control
on campus would be easier with
fraternities and sororities because it would
keep alcohol out of the dorms. As far as
costing the school more money, the Greek
organizations do service projects on
campus.
The Greek organizations also arouse
school spirit for the various sports on
campus. Enthusiastic fraternities liven up
the crowd with their cheers at a football
game. The Greeks also take road trips to
support the basketball team in the hostile
environment of another school’s home
court. The fraternities make noise at
every athletic event because they have
pride in their school.
The Greek organizations encourage
group unity on campus. Fraternities and
sororities provide a shy freshman the
opportunity to meet people and gain close
friends in their group. Friendly rivalries
usually are sparked between these
organizations, and this makes intramurals
more competitive.
Greek organizations should be
considered for Gardner-Webb because
they add important elements to the social
side of college life.

Election Results...
I would like to express my sincere
appreciation for all the support given
during my campaign.
Thank you,
Mark Dixon
SGA Treasurer, 1992-93
First off, I would like to say that defeat
does not come easy. But then one has to
remember that the Lord works His will in
everyone’s life. Gardner-Webb College
means a lot to me. ... Many students today
do not have the privileges that each one of
us here have. In light of this information I
fmd all this vandalism and basking of the
administration repulsive.
I believe Gardner-Webb has a lot of
problems (every school does), but I don’t
believe demanding one’s own way or
attempting negative means to achieve
positive results is going to solve any
problems. I believe we as students need
to voice and take actionon our concerns
but I also believe that there is a right and a
wrong way in doing things. It may be hard
to believe but the administration is made
up of people too. The administration does
not only listen to Student Government
Association, but they listen to students
also.
I do believe there needs to be a better
awareness of the decisions that are made
at Gardner-Webb. I also believe the link
of communication between students and
the administration needs to be improved
but it takes more than words to make this
happen. The students working with SGA
can make this change. I believe you have
to work with and for the school not against
them to get goals accomplished. I hope
that our newly elected officers can do just
this.
I would like to thank all those people
who believed in me and my beliefs. It can
be quite frustrating to lose when you have
tried so hard, but to quit is not the
solution and I am far from quitting. I
would like to thank those people who
tried and did so much for me. ...I wish the
newly elected SGA officers all the luck in
the world. Don’t ever lose sight of the
student goals and their ideas and don’t
confiise your goals with the students.
With this in mind, build one of the
strongest SGA’s Gardner-Webb has ever
seen. ...Best of luck to Mike McCally,
Donnie Mitchem, Crystal Higgins, Mark
Dixon and Aimee Stewart.
Sincerely,
Nicole D. Nichols
SGA Secretary
