4 The P/L07/ February 7,1994 Sports Ms ^ y > y. *'*> W^M0'M0k Technical fouls cost Bulldogs a victory by Chad Maddox sports writer It didn't pay for the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team to be concerned about technicalities in the opening half of a South Atlantic Conference double-header with Elon on January 26. A pair of technical fouls within a 40- second time period in the closing minutes helped propel the visiting Lady Fightin' Chris tians to a 71-66 conference win. The Lady Bulldogs trailed by as many as eight points in the second half, but managed to cut Elon's lead to 57-56 with 3:30 to play when Taywanee Dewberry. Gardner-Webb was applying full-court pressure when Mickie Drum was whistled for a foul in the backcourt while attempting a steal. Venting her frustrations, Drum banged the floor with her hands. The official who called the foul did not like the way Drum reacted to the call so a technical foul was assessed to Drum. Elon converted the technical free throws and extended their lead to three. Another technical foul was called when Bulldog coach Mark Hannuksela was trying to get the officials' attention because he felt an Elon shot hadn't hit the rim before the 35 second shot clock expired. When the referee turned his way, a technical foul was called on Hannuksela for being out of the coaches box. Elon converted on two more free throws and a field goal to extend the lead back to five. Gardner-Webb (2-4 SAC, 7-10) received a 14 point outing from Dewberry and Kim Houser contributed with 13 points. G-W wrestlers take third place by Andrew Hopper sports writer The Gardner-Webb Running Bulldogs wrestling team traveled to Carson-Newman on January 29 to compete in the Mid-South Classic Wrestling Tournament. Sports news and opinionated views... Okay, all you Dallas fans are loving the fact that your team has just won its second consecutive Super Farr Bowl. And, if your a sports writer Bills fan, another year of hopeless, wishful thinking has ended at the expense of Dallas’ 30-13 victory in Super Bowl XVIII. The Bills have done what no other team in sports history has ever done before, that is make it to the championship game four years in a row, without a victory. Sure, Dallas was the dominant team in Super Bowl XVni and they deserve to be champions, but where does that leave Buffalo? How are the Bills faithful supporters going to deal with this inability to win 'the big one'? Should Buffalo fans be discouraged or encouraged with their teams futility streak? Let us examine the entire picture. The Bills have proven year after year that they can Run with the Big Dogs in the American Football League. Their consistent level of play should be something that Bills fans can be proud of For the last four seasons the Buffalo Bills have won 12 games a season and have domi nated the AFL. Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, and Bruce Smith have been the consistent team leaders who have always played up to their all-star potential. So, what is wrong with consistency? Sure, the Bills can't win the one game that people tend to judge their season on. But what about the 16 games played during the regular sea son? Don't they count for anything? Of course they do. The Bills sold out every home game this season. Buffalo faithfuls braved the be low-freezing temperatures to cheer their team on to victory. So what if the Bills can't win a Super Bowl. At least they have been there four straight years. Some teams can't even say they have been there. You have got to give Buffalo some credit. One of the hardest things to do in professional sports is to repeat the success of your previous season. The Bills have been consistent win ners in the National Football League. They have constantly been at the top of their division week after week. So which is better - championships or consistency? Championships are nice, but they only last for so long. And after a while, will consistency not lead to a championship?
