Gardner-Webb welcomes new School of Education
Dee Hunt promoted to new Dean; Tubbs named new department chair
by Amy Tarlton
The Pilot correspondent
While students and faculty were eagerly
awaiting the arrival of Easter Break, members
of the Education Department were putting the
final touches on their presentation. On April
14, Dr. M. Christopher White, President of
GWU and Dr. Frank Bonner, Vice-President
for Academic Affairs, made three important
announcements which will affect a great many
Gardner-Webb students.
The first major announcement was the
accreditation by NCATE for Gardner-Webb
University. NCATE stands for the National
Council for Accreditation of Teacher Educa
tion and NCATE accreditation is a great
achievement for the Department of Education.
This approval means that graduates of
Gardner-Webb will be more highly favored
when looking for a job. Matt Webber, Direc
tor of Public Information, states that graduat
ing from Gardner-Webb with NCATE accredi
tation, means that the student has come from
a first-class program.
The approval does not come free though.
The process began on October 8, 1993 when
Dr. Blackburn approached Dr. Hunt about
getting NCATE accreditation. After a thor
ough examination of Gardner-Webb by fac
ulty, members of the.NCATE board came to
the campus for a week and did their own study.
They spoke to faculty, staff, students, and ad
ministrators and looked at how Gardner-Webb
measured up in five basic categories. Their
report was sent to the national board and evalu
ated. On Thursday, April 13, Gardner-Webb
received official notification of its new status
for the undergraduate program, as well as the
graduate program. To insure continuous ad-

“Festival of One Acts” a success
by Michelle Hill
staff writer
The Gardner-Webb University Theatre
performed its annual “Festival of One Acts”
on April 6-9. It was the theatre's fourth and
final performance of the year. This year's fes
tival featured one act from the plays The
Monkev's Paw and Ladies in Waiting.
Directing the festival was Cindy Lohr,
who made her G-W theatre debut with both
plays. Lohr is a graduate of the University of
North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree
in Design/Technical Theatre.
Especially interesting for this year’s fes
tival was the cast. Both plays featured an en
tire crew of Gardner-Webb students, with a
complete cast of newcomers performing in
Ladies in Waiting. That cast featured Melissa
Quattlebaum (Madeline Stevens), Jamie
thought the
newcomers did a
really great job.’’
Averette (Sara Iden-Simmons), Emma Haney
(Kate Mason), and Nikki Flynn as Julie
Peterson.
The cast worked really hard all three
nights and commanded excellent reviews from
play goers.
“I thought the newcomers did a really
great job,” said one attendee.

Alphies, Gardner-Webb's annual awards cer

Not enough hours in the day!
With the end of school near and exams looming,
Kerry Traynum just can't seem to find enough
time to study. Many students find themselves
