Former assistant coach, Brian Ashley, has stepped in as head coach. “The adjustment has been an easy one since the players already know me,” Ashley said. The team also seems to approve of the recent change in coaches. “Ashley is the best coach we’ve had,” Joe Yocum, a junior on the team, said. Senior Jason Fullbright said, “He’s wonderful. He’s better than what we have had in the past. There is a lot of poten tial for good things to happen with the team with Ashley I think we can make an impact as a Division I team” coaching.” The fall season ended on Nov. 1. The spring season will begin in the middle of February. There are 11 men and five women on the teams. Ashley hopes to recruit at least two more men. The pre spring season will be held in January when the ranks will be based on the fall season rank ings. The spring season will bring more Division I competi tors, which will help to prepare the team for the transition into Division I next year. “Division I will be interest ing,” Ashley said. “We can pick and choose who we want to compete against.” The team is ready to take on those Division I schools. The golfers are prepared to practice hard and to create a strong golf team to represent Gardner-Webb now and next year as a Division I school. “I want to build a strong program so we can step into a top spot in the conference next year at Division I,” Ashley said. “I think we can make an impact as a Division I team” Basl(etball team on winning streaic Brian Carlton Pilot staff With their 81-72 win last week over USC-Spartanburg here in Paul Porter Arena, the Gardner-Webb men's basket ball team remained undefeated this season at 5-0. By halftime, the Bulldogs had built a 7 point lead. They were led by Carlos Webb, who scored 14 of his team high 27 points in the first half. Two other players scored in double figures for Gardner-Webb. Bruce Fields had 15 points and Marcus Tyree finished with 19, with 14 in the second half alone. Spartanburg was led by Sherrod Singleton who scored 16 points in the game. The Rifles also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Gardner-Webb 46-40. However , poor shot selec tion and critical turnovers would end up costing Spartanburg the game. The Rifles shot 41% to Gardner- Webb’s 38%, but took fewer shots. The Bulldogs also were extremely cold from beyond the arc, hitting only 5 of 23 3- pointers attempted. The team’s next game is during the tournament in Paul Porter Arena Dec. 4.
