The “Christmas house,” as it is known by neighbors, was a beautiful two-story white home with a bright red door. Fern came home Friday night to find his house in flames. No one was home at the time of the fire. Neighbors took the family in that night, and on Saturday Christopher White, president of the university, and Mrs. White were among the first to arrive to give their assistance and support. They made it possi ble for a home to be immediately available for the Fern’s so they could stay together as a family. Norris Furniture and GWU, along with many other untold contributions, helped furnish the house. The Gardner-Webb Physical Plant was on hand and provided a significant amount of help, in spite of it being the weekend. On a rainy Sunday morn ing, the Fern’s were over whelmed by the outpouring of love. Over seventy people were in the yard doing what ever they could to assist their friends. In the midst of such a tragedy, the Fern family has m a i n - tained a remark able amount o f courage and strength, leaning on faith and the support of com munity. John 4:32 and 34 took on a new meaning for Dr. Fern and became his comfort in the wake of the tragic events. “But he said to them, ‘I have food to eat that you know nothing about. My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.’ *^But he said to theniy have food to eat that you know nothing about,,. Everything has a new perspective to it, ” — Terry Fern “Everything has a new perspective to it,” Dr. Fern said, referring to the Scripture. Despite the circum stances, Dr. Fern said, “We were having reminiscent moments in the rubble. We were brought back to Christmas years ago,” he said, as they leafed through the pic tures left behind. Prayer and “loving, caring and communicating” has kept the Fern family strong in the past days. Assistance can be given through various contributions. Recovery of pictures and memorabilia is currently tak ing place at the Fern resi dence. Donations are also appre ciated and can be made through the Music Department Office Box 7298 at Gardner-Webb University. The Investment Club is a way to learn how to invest money in a unique setting with many benefits. The mission of the Investment Club is to help stu dents learn to manage portfo lios and how to invest wisely in the stock market. The stu dents learn what to look for, in order to make a wise invest ment and what to look for that would prevent them from making bad investments. BB&T has a unique part nership with Gardner-Webb’s Investment Club, in that the bank gives money for the club to invest. The Investment Club and BB&T have been in this partnership for four years. BB&T has promised $25,000, which has and will be given to the club in increments of $5,000 per year, over a peri od of five years, ending in 2003. The club invests the money and learns, in a com fortable setting, how to man age a portfolio and tips on which stocks to invest in. Dr. Swicegood is the fac ulty representative who advis es the club and who helps the students learn. Each of the members of the club is placed into a separate committee, which researches a possible investment, in order for the group to make the best deci sions. The club helps students get a better understanding of the financial world. The knowledge they gain through the club will be lifetime bene fits. The students are learning how to manage money and invest it well now, while there are few consequences, rather than later, when mistakes will affect them greatly, said Abraham Gonzalez "It puts understanding to real life," said Gonzalez, Investment Club Secretary. The club gives students a chance to take what they learn in class and apply it to a real life situation. The club pro vides a comfortable setting in which the members are free from the stresses of tests while still learning very valuable tips, said Gonzalez. "The Investment Club is a great resource for business students at Gardner-Webb," said Gonzalez. "It gives you great experiences and real world knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere." So far, the club is not sure what they will be investing in this year because they have only had one meeting, but they hope to decide within the next few meetings. They do not worry about investing the money immedi ately because they want to make the best decisions, and the research takes time. Sometimes the club will not invest anything for an entire semester if they feel that they cannot make a good invest ment choice. The goal of the Investment Club is to use the money gained from investments as scholarships for business majors, said Gonzalez. New exam schedule Because of a conflict with original exam scheduling, the exam schedule for fall 2002 has changed, said Stephen Sain, with the registrar’s office. Originally, the faculty and freshman had to dif ferent versions. The registrar’s office had to choose to reconcile the diflFerence.
