When Ingrid is taken to prison, Astrid begins her jour ney through life. Even though she is in prison, Ingrid Magnussen has no intention of releasing the bonds she shares with her daughter. “White Oleander” has a stunning cast: Michelle Pfeiffer (Ingrid Magnussen), Robin Wright Penn and Renee Zellweger. In the past these leading ladies have stunned audiences in movies such as, “Dangerous Minds,” “The Princess Bride” and “Bridget That’s Life by Charlie Baber Jones s Diary,” respectively. The audience will not be disappointed by their perfor- manccs, nor will they have re£i- son to disapprove of newcomer Alison Lohman, who believ ably portrays the ever-evolving Astrid. Also, for “ER” watchers, the movie possesses a special treat: Noah Wyle. However, the most striking performance would be that of Michelle Pfeiffer, whom the author pic tured as the icy Ingrid while developing and writing her novel. When compared to Fitch’s novel, the movie is watered down^and becomes a crusade for good foster care and the need for improvement in the child welfare system. The novel, “White Oleander,” is not for everyone. There are many scenes that most would find disturbing; however, I highly enjoyed the book and prefer it to the movie. There are many levels to Astrid and especially Ingrid that are not revealed in the movie. If you wish to read the novel, I would advise you read it before you see the movie. Overall, for the squeamish, “White Oleander” is best expe rienced in the theater rather than by reading the novel.
