MIAMI, Fla. - The win
streak continues, and so does
the quest for the Big South
championship.
Gardner-Webb pulled out a
close one Saturday against
Florida International, 17-14,
. despite 88 degrees worth of
Miami heat, a winning streak
on the line and a feisty FTU
football team. The win moved
Gardner-Webb to 6-1 on the
season, their best start since
1992.
Freshman running back
George Pressley scored on a
15-yard pass play from senior
quarterback Jeremy, Martin
early in the fourth quarter, and
the defense took care of the
rest. FIU threatened late in the
game, moving inside the GWU
five-yard line with less than six
minutes to play. On third-and-
goal, Jason Threat stripped the
ball from the fullback and Jim
Maxwell recovered.
The ensuing drive stalled,
and the Bulldogs were forced
to kick it away with 1:30 still
remaining. But FIU punt
returner Legrant Perry fumbled
Graham Whitlock’s punt, and
junior Chris Foster recovered
the ball for GWU, sealing the
victory.
Pressley led the offensive
attack, rushing for a career-best
104 yards on 11 carries. Martin
played solid, completing 14-of-
21 passes for 111 yards and a
touchdown.
The Bulldogs have won
five-straight games, tying them
for the sixth-longest winning
streak in with Eastern Illinois,
Georgia Southern, William &
Mary and Morehead State.
GWU also moved into the top
30 division I-AA football teams
in three national polls with the
win over FIU, and were ranked
27th by The Sports Network.
Gardner-Webb hosts UT-
Martin Saturday at 1:30 for
Homecoming where they will go
for their sixth-straight victory.
