Bradford goes pro .lohn Olson Web Editor After finishing three seasons as a Kunnin’ Bulldog, Sam Bradford chose to go on to the next level of baseball. Bradford signed a professional baseball contract with the Seattle Mariners after being chosen in the 22nd round of the Major League Draft. “Having a player drafted and signed by a professional team has already helped our program in terms of visibility and recruit ing. We hope there will be a number of draft picks from our future teams,” said Head Coach Rusty Stroupe. “But, we stress to the young men (that we recruit) that signing a professional contract should not be their primary goal when they come to Gardner- Webb. First and foremost, they should be concerned with growing spiritually, intel lectually, athletically, and socially (while they pursue a degree).” Aceording to Stroupe, Bradford’s base ball contract includes the Mariners paying for the rest of his college education. Bradford is playing for the Aqua Sox in Everett, Wash, The Aqua Sox program is a single A farm league member. Bradford, rated the number nine college position player in North Carolina by the June Amateur Draft, obtained placement in GWU’s top four ho'me run list following his third season as a Bulldog. During Bradford’s three seasons at Gardner-Webb the outfielder batted .319. The rising senior played a career total of 166 games, 592 at bats, 187 hits, 31 dou bles, six triples, 33 home runs, 106 runs bat ted in and 41 stolen bases. “1 believe Sam has the natural ability to one day play in the Major Leagues, but he faces a lot of competition as every minor leaguer's dream is to make ‘the show,’ said Stroupe. “But hopefully we will see him playing on television at some point in the future.” For more information, visit http;//www.aquasox.eom.
