Tennis set to compete at Atlantic Sun conference

The Gardner-Webb men’s and
women’s tennis teams suffered loss
es on Monday to Campbell. The
Camels teams proved to be too
strong for the GWU men and
women as the men lost 7-0 and the
women took a 5-2 loss on the road.
The Bulldogs (2-4 A-Sun) were
led by the doubles duo of Bryan
Edmonds and Roberto Vasques.
Edmonds and Vasques won their
number three doubles 9-8 against
the Fighting Camels. However, nei
ther of the other doubles pairs or sin
gles claimed victory for the
Bulldogs.
As for the rest of the season, the
Bulldogs next match
will be in the A-Sun
Conference
Tournament. Mercer
is hosting the confer
ence tournament
from April 14-17 at
the John Drew Smith
Tennis Center in
Macon, Ga.
Even though the Lady Bulldogs
(0-7 A-Sun) lost as well, they fin
ished with wins at number five and
six singles. Both Krystina Sigmon
and Elena Iltcheva won their singles
matches against Campbell. Sigmon
won 6-3, 6-2 over Stacey
Batkiewicz. Iltcheva, a senior from
Sofia, Bulgaria won 6-1, 6-2 against
Colen Gore in singles action.
Overall the Lady Bulldogs lost
5-2 to Campbell, and will look to get
a non-conference win today at South
Carolina State. The match is sched
uled to start at 3 p.m.

“It looks like we’re (men) goin^
to be the eighth or ninth seed play
ing against Belmont,” said Head
Coach Mike Griffith. “We have a
good chance of beating them if we
play well.”
For the women, Griffith men
tioned “We’re a yoimg team. We
played well. Anything can happen
(at conference).” •

Golf ends season at Belmont

Gardner-Webb golf is now in
full swing as the men headed to
Belmont to play in the Belmont
Invitational. The Bulldogs finished
13th out of the 19-team field. The
men managed to shoot a team score
of 891 in their final tournament
before the Atlantic Sun conference
championship.
The Bulldogs Roiy McCauglma
posted a strong 72 in his opening
round to help him earn a 20th place
finish with the score of 220. Brett
Saunders got better everyday of the
toiunament by scoring a 75, 74 and
73 to end with a tournament score of
222 and a tie in 35th place.
Steve McDonald and Matt
Renegar each posted a 226 to finish
in a tie for 56th while Casey Flattery
tied for the 68th spot with his 228.
The Bulldogs are back in action
on April 19 when they travel to play
in the A-Sun championships hosted
by Campbell.
The women’s golf team will
play in the Bonnie Hoover Invite on
April 10. This will be the last tour
nament for the women before play
ing in the conference champi
onships.
Diamond Dogs defeat Bulldogs

The Gardner-Webb baseball
team sealed a win this past Tuesday
by defeating UNC Asheville 6-2 in
Boiling Springs.
After taking a 2-0 lead in the
third inning. Bulldogs (14-16) pitch
er Abe Gonzalez did not allow a run

Matt Roberts drove in a run during
the sixth inning with two on and one
out. However, a second run batted in

UNCA failed to acquire any more
runs. The Bulldogs pulled away in
the eighth inning after an RBI single
by Matt Higginson, a two RBI triple
by Sammy Styers, and an RBI dou
ble by Billy McCarson provided
four more runs for GWU. The
Bulldogs secured the win with foui^
runs in the eight iiming.
GWU will play a three game
series against Campbell at home
starting today at 3 p.m. The last two
games of the iseries will conclude in
a double header on Saturday starting
at 1 p.m. , ..
