Men’s basketball cruising eariy

After an easy 89-48 season opening win against low
ly Covenant College, the Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-
Webb faced a little bit tougher of a team in Montreat
College Monday night.
The Dawgs ultimately showed they were the supe
rior team as they pulled away for an 89-62 victory.
The favorites by a large margin, the GWU was con
cerned early as Montreat hit three straight three-point
ers to start the game, building confidence for the NAIA
school of 900 students.
Leading by just nine points at halftime, GWU stayed
patient and converted 43 points off the 23 Montreat
turnovers.
GWU player David Brown, a transfer from Broward
College, found'a rhythm of his own in the second half
as he knocked down three shots from long range and
also had a nice driving layup as he scored 15 points on
the night, 10 in the second half.
Also coming off the bench was Stefon Johnson who
thrilled the crowd with his performance.
Several minutes after pinning a shot attempt by
Montreat, Johnson received a nice pass from Jonathan
Moore and threw down a monster dunk over Montreat

star Dustin Harris, sending the crowd into a frenzy that
last the rest of the game.
Johnson scored 11 points, while Moore and C.J.
Hailey each contributed 13 a piece.
. Josh Henley and Auryn MacMillan only had 10
points combined, but the two were dominating forces
on the boards, bring down 12 and 9 rebounds, respec
tively.
The win brings Gardner-Webb to 2-0 on the season
as the team prepares for another lower level team in
Methodist College on Saturday before heading to Cha
pel Hill to take on the 4th ranked Tar Heels on Mon
day.

night in a 70-38 home
victory at Paul Porter
Arena. The Bulldogs im
proved their record to 1 -1
as the WSSU Lady Ram’s
fell to 0-2 for the season.
“We did a better job of
controlling tempo,” said
GWU head coach Rick
Reeves, “Slowing down
when we wanted to slow
down and speeding up
when we wanted to speed
up.”
The Bulldogs put
forth a true team effort
with 10 different play
ers scoring, led by Mar
garet Roundtree’s 10
points and six boards.
Juniors LaTroya Pope,
Dominique Hudson, Mo
nique Hudson and San
dra Vaitkute contributed
nine points apiece, while
Courtney Epps dropped
in eight points to go with
three steals.
All but two players
put points on the board,
something Reeves said he
was “extremely pleased
with.”
Reeves also men
tioned that the Bulldog’s
vastly improved on their
past win over the Rams,
last year only winning by
nine points.
Shooting 56 percent
from the field in the first
half, the Bulldogs led 36-
26 at halftime. Continuing
the exceptional shooting
into the second half (52.2
percent), the Bulldogs
capitalized on 11 WSSU
turnovers by scoring 18
points and rolling to a 32-
10 run with 7 minutes left
on the clock.
The Bulldogs held
the Lady Rams to only
four made field goals in
the second half, further
cushioning their lead to a
whopping 32 points.
Vontisha Woods of
WSSU had a team-high,
game-high 13 points
and eight rebounds, and
guard Rene Rector made
two from behind the arc
as well as two free-throws
for a total eight points.
Gardner-Webb will
look to futher improve its
record in the next context
as the Lady Bulldogs will
host the Limestone Lady
Saints tomorrow at 7 p.m.
in Paul Porter Arena.

Women Soccer Stumbles in Conference Tourny

The High Point Panthers blanked the
Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb in.
the first round of Big South Conference
tournament play. With a final score of 2-0,
Gardner-Webb’s season has come to a
close.
Both High Point and Gardner-Webb’s
keepers proved to have a solid first half, as
the affair remained 0-0 going into the half
time break.
Yet, in the 66th minute, Katie Taber
of High Point was able to capitalize on a
crossing ball sent by teammate Courtney
Spots. A mere seven minutes later, the
Panthers again found the back of the net to
go up 2-0.
Despite being in a large deficit with
few minutes remaining, the Lady Dawgs
continued to fight until the last whistle
had been blown. Senior Kasey Gladhill
connected with the cross bar in the 84th
minute, and two more shots on goals in
the 87th minute.
The Gardner-Webb women’s soccer
team finished the 2009 season with an
overall record of 12-9-0, With 12 wins this
season, the Bulldogs dramatically im
proved their record from the 2008 season.
“I think overall we played well this
season,” said GWU goalkeeper Samantha
Rupert. “We took-it game by game, and
we grew as a team. We will look at the
spring as a way to improve and get better
for next season. I’m proud of the team and
what we accomplished this season.”
Men’s soccer falls to WInthrop

The Gardner-Webb
men’s soccer team
wrapped up their 2009
season with a loss to the
Big South Conference
tournament champions,
Winthrop University. The
Runnin’ Bulldogs lost an
epic battle in a penalty
kick thriller after over
100 minutes of play.
After 90 minutes of
regulation, the Eagles
and iJawgs were tied 2-
2, going into two golden
goal overtime periods.
Battling for possession,
neither team was able to
capitalize as the referees
blew their whistles sig
naling penalty kicks.
The Winthrop Eagles
defeated the Gardner-
Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs
4-3 in penalty kicks to
advance into the second
round of the conference
tournament.
However, multiple
Runnin’ Bulldogs were
honored by the Big South
Conference for their
work on the field, as well
as in the classroom.
Junior goalkeep
er Trent Kozman was
awarded the Big South
Scholar-Athlete of the
Year. Kozman, a 4.0
grade point average, is
majoring in mathematics.
He was also named to the
All-Academic Team.
Gerard Heffron, Jo-
van Ivanovich, Romeo
Kabanda, Jon Ole Rein-
hardsen, and John Sar-
gant all received honors
from the Big South Con
ference.
Kozman was able to
share his insights on the
season, as well as the
2010 season.
“Everyone is hungry
after this season, and
falling in penalty kicks
in our last game—we are
motivated,” said Koz
man. “We are driven to.
build on this year and
win the Big South tour
nament next year.”
When asked about
preparations for next
season, Kozman, blunt
and to the point, stated:
“The work for next
season starts now.”
