The scoring was topped off by Wake Forest forward Andy Rosenband, when he one-touched passed from teammates Chris Lonteen and Ben Stafford to seal the deal at 4-0. The loss dxQDped UNCW m n_.ii- I, while Wake Forest evened their record at 3-3. UNCW Head Coach Keith Cammidge explained the loss by simply stating, “They are a class above us and 1 think that showed tonight. Technically, their move ment off the ball and without the ball were excellent.” “We went out and played a defen sive game and then tried to attack. but eventually they picked their way and found a way to score,” said freshman forward Michael Clarke. Although disappointed with the outcome. Coach Cammidge believed that it was a learning experience. “These games [out of conference] are different. They enjoy these games, it’s a humbling experience in some ways, but it's also a good \ - rvi ui> tia a gram,” said Cammidge. Cammidge also mentioned that the players are upbeat and looking forward to starting conference play, which they will do this Wednesday at home against Mount Olive at 7 p.m. Clarke wanted to thank the fans for their support and said, “Keep supporting us and I promise we’ll get a win in there somewhere.’’ Runner, from page 1 5 liked the people.” she said of her final decision to attend UNCW. A redshirt senior. Statz is the Seahawks’ No. 1 runner this cross country season. She overtook the top spot this year after All-East 10.000-meter runner Jaime Hunter graduated last year. Coming off the best track season of her career where she ran 18:06 for 5000- meters. and qualified for the ECAC Championships for 10.000-meters with a personal best time of 36:58, Statz sets her goals high for her fi nal cross country season. “1 hope to run in the low 18’s.” she said, adding that, “it is always harder to run quicker times in cross country because of the courses.” The cap tain leads a well-rounded women’s team with five seniors, one junior, two sophomores, and four fresh men, using her speed and leadership to set a challenging pace for the rest of the runners on the squad. Running the top spot for the Seahawks is a new experience for the senior. “I’ve definitely moved up a lot,” Statz said about her four years running cross country for UNCW. She ran the top seven all four years, but always had older runners ahead of her, helping her along. “We’ve had a lot of good people run here,” she said. In addition to the strong runners that UNCW’s team has boasted, Statz attributes much of her per sonal success to the Colonial Ath letic Association, and the teams that the Seahawks compete within invitationals: “There are always going to be teams that are better than us. When we run against them in meets we get better.” This com petition is her favorite aspect of running. “You have to be competi tive to like [cross country]. It’s fun to compete with people,” she said. Statz has shown tremendous de termination and dedication in trav eling the road to where she is now. Her freshman cross country season was cut short after one race. After almost passing out during the race, she was diagnosed with anemia. She redshirted that season, and worked all year to overcome the ill ness and regain her shape. Statz describes her comeback trail as one that unraveled, “really slowly,” but she persevered to get her shape back for track season. “I came back in the middle of October, and then came back for track and had a fairly good season.” “It ended up being a pretty de cent year after all,” she said.
