The Sea and Cake fol low tradition with another set of light jazzy tunes that float along like wind-driven whispers in their new CD, Oui. Formed in the independent music scene of Chicago, The Sea and Cake began as a ‘project’ and never expected to record more than one album. As part of the heralded indie/artsy Thrill Jockey records family, which is home to Tortoise, Isotope 217 and Oval, The Sea and Cake found themselves in perfect company for their brand of an gular soft rock. After finding a delicate balance with their mix of post-rock fusion, they de cided to continue recording. Oui marks the band’s fifth full- length album and their first al bum since 1997’s The Fawn. A short and simple ten-track outing, Oui differs from the last record in that the electronic el ements are much more subtle than those in The Fawn. The lead vocals of Sam Prekop are also higher in the mix, adding a wistful soundtrack of carefree rambling to the already silky smooth grooves of Oui. Best of all, like most records The Sea and Cake have put out, Oui is not in too much of a hurry to get anywhere, but is instead enjoy ing the ride. The album’s opener, “After noon Speaker”, is Oui’s most up beat and bouncy track, while re maining unconcerned about too , much tempo or seriousness. “All « the Photos” is an instrumental that J is satisfied to slink along with the nonchalance of a lazy bass line ' and a few unhurried guitar riffs. , The comforting Afro-Cuban rhythms and honey-like vocals of ] “The Colony Room” are enough i to make most anyone stay in bed | a little longer, making everyday i seem like a weekend. ' If you think The Sea and Cake , sound eerily like Tortoise, there ' is good reason. Drummer John \ McEntire moonlights indie-style, ' playing for the brilliant ambient ' pioneers Tortoise and as well as The Sea and Cake. What McEntire brings from Tortoise is an organic element in the percus sion, something that grounds the abstract arpeggios of guitarists Archer Prewitt and Sam Prekop. The slow and simple drums and pleasant bubbling of sounds on “The Leaf’ are like an underwa ter paradise, making us glad that Sam Prekop recruited someone from such a talented group like Tortoise. If songs like the buoyant charmer “Everyday” aren’t enough to float your boat then you must be going too fast for this little ship. For everyone else, re lax and enjoy your drinks, The Sea and Cake’s Oui will do the rest. The Sea and Cake will be per forming at the Cat’s Cradle in Chapel Hill Nov. 18.
