Instead, what was published in its place? Intramural basketball. By no means is this against any intramural sport being published. In fact, 1 think they should be published. However, I believe it should not be at the expense of the varsity teams’ seasonal and championship accom plishments. Consider this: what would hap pen if UNCW had an intramural swimming league, and every week the school paper published the latest standings and accomplish ments of that league instead of publishing the school’s varisty basketball team’s CAA cham pionship win and automatic NCAA tourna ment berth? A lot of people, including myself, would see this as a problem and would never let it happen. If this is so, then what justifies printing intramural sports over the other varsity teams’ latest victories and losses? Realize that I am not only speaking for the swim team, but for all of the sports that do not receive the recog nition they deserve. We hardly receive any recognition because most of us are considered to be Olympic sports. We rarely receive any attention except for once every four years at the Olympic Games. The only reason we do receive any attention during the games is because the swim teams, the track teams. and the gymnastic teams do better than the basketball team. But because we are not profitable sports, we’re easy to overlook. This must change. In your publishing policy, you claim that the Seahawk is “a source of news for the University and surrounding community.” If this is true, and some of our athletic teams are receiving national recognition boosting UNCW’s reputation, then why are newswor thy achievements not published? 1 understand that all of the University’s news cannot be covered in every issue. Seeing as how the swim season is over, 1 offer a sug gestion for future athletic seasons. Perhaps you should consider putting a score box in one of the comers of the sports section. The box could include every team that competed that week, their opponents, and the score of the game or match. This way, all of the sports teams are recognized in some fashion. It doesn’t always have to be an in-depth article, except for big events. In conclusion, 1 think we have a ^reat newspaper, but there are some things that need to change. Thanks for your time and consideration of this letter, and I apologize to anyone who 1 may have offended.
