I PAGE EIGHT THE LANCE DECEMBER 19, 1961 I Speaking Of Sports Baxley and Bunnell yVre Intramurals The Best Way Was participation in the intramural football and volleyball tournaments of as high a degree as had been expected? Did the complexity of the organizational set-up become too demand ing of the students’ time? Would not class teams create a higher degree of interest and participation? Answer to the first question is No. Response to the intra mural program was below expectations. One reason for this could be that the answer to the second question is yes—the organization of the intramural teams involved bringing together too many students from too many classes. It is true that by drawing from the overall student body teams can be composed of players of varying degrees of skill, but is this always true and alw^ays best? Many years after graduation students will think of themselves as a class more often than as part of a team composed of students from all other classes. Each class has its own distinctions, and most often would prefer to retain those distinctions in all activities in which the class participates. A definite answer of yes or no cannot be given to the third question at the present time. It is hoped that more stu dents will be prompted to consider the case of intramural teams versus class teams and each student will judge for himself which he thinks best. Green Team Wins VolleybaU Gold overcame Orange to win the opening game of the girl’s intramural volleyball tournament in an overtime thriller. A team must win two out of three games in eight minute quarters or the first team that gets fifteen points. In a very close game Gold managed to squeeze by a 23-21 point lead. It wasn’t easy play for the Bed team as they put Blue down by winning two out of three games. Green ended their first game quickly by winning the first two games over Gray. Gold, very determined to take the tournament, was fight ing as they took the lead over the Gray team by winning two out of three games. The green and red teams were trying to keep their win ning streak in the second games of the tournament, but green managed to come out on top by winning two out of three games. Green, determined, managed another win as they took Blue. SStill unable to hold Gold down, Red was set back as Gold took two out of three games. Two teams were unable to play because they did not have enough players; so Orange forfeited to Gold and Gray forfeited to Red. In the final game Green lost the first game to Gold but would not let up in her fight for the championship. Green took the last two games and ended the volleyball tournament with a Knights Drop 3 In A Row perfect winning streak. L.B. The Knights are fully off the launching pad in this, St. An drew’s first season of intercol legiate basketball. The young team is gaining valuable ex perience and is learning to play as a team. Coach Rufus Hack ney has been constantly shift ing his Knights in order to find a good scoring threat as well as a tight defense. The first history-making game with Frederick was an indication of the type of teams the Knights will face on this year’s 13 game schedule. In dropping this one 67 to 54, Cecil Chewnlng was high man with 16 points followed by Joe Buck ner, Jim Buimell, and Joe Speaks with 15, 8 and 7 points respectively. The second game with Louis- burg found the Knights guilty of fouls, enabling Louisburg to make 107 to 69 victory. Joe Speaks led the Knights with a total of 15 points and no fouls. Joe Buckner also was credited with 15 points followed by Cecil Chewning with 11 and Jerry Dawson with 8 points. Next, St. Andrews was un able to find the str'aw to break the tall camel’s back and bowed to Campbell College 81 to 60. The Knights gave way several inches in height to the taller forwards and centers of Camp bell and had quite a few shots blocked. Late in the game Bill Grossman led a rally to bring the Knights up within a 20 point margin. Cecil Chewiiing topped scoring honors again SCOTLAND FINANCE CO. Ill Fairley St. Laurinburg, N. C.
