(Photo by Zeh) Wrestling Team Opens Season With Pfeiffer College Tonight Tonight the 10-man wrestling team will represent St Andrews at Pfeiffer College in the team’s first match of the season; their next engagement will be against William & Mary’s junior var sity Feb. 9. Prof. William Mor gan and Coach James Ollis have worked closely with these boys to get them in shape, with the assistance of team captain Dick Knowles. The team consists of Woody Woodard, co-captain; Larry Varner, Fleming Jones, Nick Hobbie, Dave Caraker, Jack Hansel, Lee Yarborough, Pas cal Stewart, and Charles Year- gen. Some of the boys wrestled last year at PJC, but most are new to the mat. In spite of their inexperience, to quote Captain Knowles, “The spirit and effort of a winning team has been shown in the work outs and exercises.” Scientific wrestling is some thing of an art as well as a sport. Scientific wrestling de pends upon speed, skill, and ability to outsmart one’s op ponent,' and does not rely on painful pressure holds. Captain Knowles has express ed his appreciation to the team for its hard work and looks forward to gaining valuable ex perience this season. He adds, “We hope to come back from AAU with a few medals to our credit.” KNIGHTS Vs. WILMINGTON TONIGHT ATTENTION The College Book Store will not purchase used books from students at the end of the present semester. It is, however, their hope to pur chase from the students at the end of the year all books that can be resold. We Won One!! Seven proved to be the magic number as the Knights of St. Andrews recorded their first varsity basketball win. The feeling was in the air as the Knights took the court for the second half in Charlotte that a victory was within reach if the Knights could maintain their first-half pace. As the fin al buzzer sounded, St. Andrews was on top in points for the first time this season 84 to 73. Behind 3 points at half time, St. Andrews kept right behind the Charlotte College five and pulled out ahead in the last minute of play. The Knights played as a team and won as a team play ing together should win. Cecil Chewning, Joe Speaks, and Bill Clark played heads up ball un der the boards and in the scor ing department for the Knights. Defeated Again The Camels of Campbell Col lege proved their height and team experience were too great for the Knights to overcome as they downed St. Andrews by 20 points in the second meet ing of these teams on the sea son. Campbell is having anoth er fine year with only two de feats to mar their record. The Knights fought an up-hill battle all the way. The Knights were determined after their fine showing against Georgia State in their last outing. This marked the sixth straight loss for Coach Rufus Hackney’s young Knights. Although never really in the game, the Knights tried hard to regain the com posure that makes a team a threat. Georgia State Edges Knights The Knights made their first out-of-state trip, one that prov ed St. Andrews is on the verge of its first basketball victory. Coach Rufus Hackney took the Knights on a three-day trip to Atlanta, Georgia, and almost came back with a victory. In losing to Georgia State, 88-84, the Knights gained an import ant step in overall team morale. The two equally balanced teams played nip-and-tuck throughout the contest, with St. Andrews leading at half-time, 47-46. In ,the scoring department Joe Buckner took high man hon ors for the game and for the Knights with 26 points. Bill Clark scored all of his 16 points in the first half except for 2 points he scored before leaving the game in the first few min utes of the second half. Joe Speaks and George Britt had 10 points apiece, while Jim Bun nell and Jerry Dawson had 9 and 5 points respectively. Rounding out the scoring for the Knights was Cecil Chewn ing with 6 points before leaving the game early because of a foot injury. L.EQ90N ORUQ STTOREaw DIAL CR. 6-0C33 LAURINBURG. N. C.
