How do you feel about this redirection of the Peace Corps? Miss Bryant responded that this was a good idea as well as a big job. She also expressed reservation about leaving the black community entirely be cause the two races need to learn to live together. She would like to see the Peace Corps work with blacks and whites. Mr, Garrison felt that this new program should be on a trial basis first. He expressed openness to the white and black communities for their response to the "new” Peace Corps, Mr. Garrison continued to say that if black students are not able to handle the tutoring in the black community and spokesmen from that com munity express this, then the whites should move back in to help the blacks. Miss Hardison called the “new” Peace Corps a “totally new concept”. She stated that she saw the pointthat theblacks were making but also felt that the whites have a responsi bility toward the blacks which cannot be ignored. The Peace Corps should recognize this dual responsibility. I like many, question student government. Exactly what it is, what it does, and If it does govern have been a few ofthese questions. With the exception of the Judicial System, student government is basically a structured pressure" group. The Student Association has in the past functioned well in seeing campus issues through to their solution or, as the case has been in a few instances, to their proper committee. To a large degree students have faith in student government. This was illustrated by the events which occurred on campus last month. Students wanted to be heard by students and were heard by students. This indi cates that there are some facets of campus life where we are governing ourselves, but to think we are or should be run ning the school is a distortion. However, not to attempt and acquire a voice in decisions made concerning the college is to neglect not only our own well being but that of our pre sently intended alma mater. Students should be constantly Involved in determining their own programs and those of the institution as a whole. There is this involvement now. I would like to see a new emphasis put on joint committees of stu dents, facutly, and administra tors and a better line of com munication opened between the various committees and the campus community. Perhaps Mecklenburg from its ill re pute, has the personal dedica tion necessary for this office. Miss Fulton has shown con tinued interest in St. Andrews since her freshman year having served on the Womens’ Resi dence Court for two years. Charlie Pratt's experience and enthusiasm qualify him as the best qualified candidate to run as junior representative to the Student Faculty Appellate Board. OHE HOUR MARTINIZING The Most In Dry Cleaning And Laundry Service the students taking part on the major committees shou d be elected rather than appointed. _ In this way they would be re cognized as choices of the ma jority of students. This may mean a move away from Sta- dent Association offices as the most important elected po sitions. They seem to be losing momentum on their own not only at St. Andrews but at other colleges and universities as well. To direct the thrust of student concern toward invol vement in policy making com mittees is to suggest a plau sible means where we, as stu dents, can find a suitable role in an academic community. I close remaining open to all who are willing to take the time necessary for me to hear their opinions.
