^pTpgnAY. OCT. 9, 1969 THE LANCR Unight Gift Of$25,000 for College The Knight Foundation of Ak ron (Mo has announced a grant of $25,000 to the Forward Cam paign ’of St. Andrews Presby terian College. This action by me foundation’s board of trus ses was announced during the weekend in a joint statement by John S. Knight, president, and James L. Knight, vice-presi dent. Thomas M. B elk of Charlotte, chairman of the St. Andrews board of trustees, said the grant Vill make possible the es tablishment of the Knight Scho larship Fund. The fund will pro vide financial aid for students from the Charlotte-Mecklen- burg area. Belk also noted that the St. Andrews Forward Campaign now has passed the $4.8 million mark toward an immediate goal of $5 million. Included in that [ is $2 million for endowment fiinds to provide annual Income for student financial aid, salary supplements for professors, and additional funds for library improvement. St. Andrews President Do nald J. Hart, terming the Knight grant “significant and timely assistance,” said such sup port is essential to help St. Andrews and other private col leges expand financial aid to deserving students in the face of rising college costs. The $5 million immediate sal is part of a $30 million expansion program to be real ized by 1979. Construction or enlargement of six buildings is tacluded in i m m e diate goal plans. Now nearing completion is the first building project- unique science center and teaching auditorium. The science center has attracted national attention for its design and the integrated science cur riculum it will make possible. Rehab Project Moving BY LYNNE DURDEN The Rehabilitation Project at St. Andrews was begun In 1965 under a Research and Demon stration Grant from the De partment of Health, Education and Welfare. Throu^ this Pro ject all handicapped students at St. Andrews can be provided with a roommate-aide to help In the everyday routines of college life such as operating mailbox combinations, pushing wheelchairs, opening doors, and carrying cafeteria trays. As an outgrowth of the Re habilitation Project the first Student Advisory Board was chosen by popular vote of all participants in the Project, both handicapped students and stu dent aides. The original plan was to elect five members but as a result of ties seven mem bers, some handicapped and some aides, were chosen. They were: Lynne Durden, David Flucke, Dixie Fulton, Beth Har tley, Sally McLeod, Charles Pratt, and Kenneth Pritchard. Those members of the Board who did not graduate last spring, Lynne, Dixie, Beth and Charles met the second week in Sep tember to elect new members for this year. The new mem bers chosen at this time were: Marion Davis, Mary Mewborn, Eddie Smith, and RobWheless. Because they felt a need for more full representation from the dorms on the Board, the new members were chosen in such a way that each of the flat dorms wouldhave two mem bers on the Board and that one handicapped student and one aide would represent each dorm. The Student Advisory Board has several important pur poses. First of all, it acts as a liason between all Project participants, the student body and the college administration. Second, it serves to interpret PAGE 8 A Preview Theatre Group Ready For Show BY JIM POPE A few rambling thoughts on the Highland Players current venture, “West Side Story.” After attending several re hearsals, 1 have come to the conclusion that Arthur Mc Donald, director of the pro duction, has compiled a cast and I a half for this play. All of the leads are perfect for their roles, at least that is my opinion - who knows what Dudley will think. Kaye Comer, as Anita, is perfect for the role. She IS Anita, and takes on the role with all the bite of a Puerto Rican woman. Her lover, Ber nardo, played by Denny Rich- various administrative poli cies to the students. Third, it helps to communicate the needs, questions, interests, requests, etc. of the Project participants to the Project staff. And fin ally, it continually advises the college administration through the Project staff as to the ar chitectural barriers still re maining on campus. The Student Advisory Board has been and is now involved in several activities direct ly connected with the Project. Last spring, the Board was asked to help compile a bro chure telling about the Pro ject to be given to all inter ested persons. Copies of this brochure, entitled “Mission; Possible” are availabe in the office of the Project Director, Mr. Robert Urle. Occasionally, it is necessary to send out reminders to Pro ject participants so that the research Involved in the Re habilitation Project can keep moving smoothly. This includes reminders of necessary testing, time sheets to be given out to the student aides to be filled out by them, etc., and is handled by the Board. ards has the look and the man ner one would expect the leader of a gang to have. Marla, Bonnie Stuart, is beautiful when she sings and many will be sur prised to hear such a big voice from such a little lady. On the American side of the story are Henry Del Tosto, Tony, who is very convincing. Ron Wllkerson, Riff, leader of the Jets, adds the dancing zest which stood out in the movie. Sally Carlson, outstanding as Anybodys, could steal her scenes. The rest of the cast shows the enthusiasm and spirit which will make “West Side Story” a play not to be missed. See It. Organization and planning of such activities as the Driver’s Training for the handicapped offered last year and this year, is also done by the Board. They worked in connection with Mr. Urie and Mr. Babcock to make this activity possible last year and will continue this year. One of the most important activities of the Student Ad visory Board is to share ques tions and information from the student body with other mem bers of the board and Mr. Urie through regular meetings. These meetings are held ev ery Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the Small Dining Room. GRE’S Set PRINCETON, N. J. - Educa tional Testing Service an nounced today that undergradu ates and others preparing to go to graduate school may take the Graduate Record Exami nations on any of six different test dates during the current academic year. The first testing date for the GRE is October 25,1969. Scores from this administration will be reported to the graduate schools before December 1. The other five test dates are December 13, 1969; January 17, February 28, April 25 and July 11, 1970. Equivalent late fee and registration deadlines apply to these dates. Choice of test dates should be determined by the re quirements of graduate schools or fellowships to which one is applying.
